Sapphire, when the time comes to get a CC - sign up for a Capital One MC! You don't need a job, I put down "homemaker" as my occupation HAHA and they still approved me! For a low $500 limit, but it's a good start! Now I am using it here and there, paying it off in full when due, and they have bumped my limit already to $1000

I'm happy to hear you guys had success!

I'll check my mail for my SSN when I get back. I got a certified copy of my marriage license yesterday, so I'm going to file my AOS when I get back from vaca :)

I'm still using my Canadian credit card, but just changed my address to my US address with them.

I also got car insr with Geico until I register my car.

I have the two cards I got (macys and JCP) and my hubby has given me two of his credit cards..that works lol!

I'm gonna prep my AOS package and then run it by you guys before I send it in :)

Is there a difference between a marriage licence and a marriage certificate? Maybe it depends on which state you're in. In NJ, I thought we got a licence so we could get married, but then the marrying officiant gave us a marriage certificate. It was the marriage certificate that we filed. We also had to wait for the marriage certificate to be sent to us which only took about a week, but others have had a harder time getting it quickly. I could be confused, but just thought I'd mention it Poprocks. Can anyone clarify?

Edit: Oops, i Just realized you got married earlier this week, so you probably have the correct document.

The marriage license is what you get at the courthouse after you show proof of eligibility & pay.... the marriage certificate is what comes when an officiant actually marries you, and files it with the state. When it has the date/signatures on it, it's a marriage cert. The license is just the document giving you permission to marry

So do you have to wait until you get the marriage certificate? or can you use the certified copy of the marriage licence from the courthouse? for AOS purposes?....and for other name changing services? I am confused.

It depends on each state.... some you don't get the cert on the spot, in PA I did. The officiant kept one part of it to send it to the state for registration, and we kept the signed official copy.... I ended up going to the courthouse in person to obtain a certified copy. For AOS purposes a marriage license is no good. That doesn't PROVE you actually got married, just that you applied. You have to send in the marriage certificate for AOS.

I'm not sure if this is NYC thing, but we just got a printed copy of a "Certificate of Marriage Registratio"

There are no signatures on it but it does have all the info printed on it. So far, so good as well.

I think they really vary by state. In NY if you don't get married in a courthouse, you have to send away for something I believe.

I guess this is as good a place as any to say this, since you're talking about it. .....

I've had a Marriott Rewards card since 1986..... in my former name, of course. I never bothered changing it after I married because they wanted me to fax stuff, blah blah blah, so I thought "Oh, it's not that important. I'll just leave things as they are." So, anyway, they're always sending me offers for credit cards..... both back in Canada, and now here in the States. So the offers just kept getting better and better until, finally, last week, I went "Let's just see what happens" and did an online application using the offer code I received in the mail. I used my current married name and I really didn't expect to be approved because, well, I don't work. Well, the card came in the mail today! And it's for 5k.... even though I put down "retired". So my husband, who had brought in the mail and saw who it was addressed to says "Why didn't you get it in your married name?" Sure enough, it's in my former name! Oh well. I guess I'll have to go through a rigamarole to change it. But I'm definitely concerned about that, though, because businesses sporadically ask to see additional ID and everything I have for this address is in my new name. *sigh*

Oh. And just as an addendum..... I also have a Southwest Rapid Rewards card. And they keep sending me the same offers.... except the credit card rewards are related to SW. So I looked and, sure enough, the same financial institution sends out the offers. Just saying this to let everyone know they have the opportunity to apply for credit cards through Southwest or the Marriott, either in the US or Canada.

Oops, I meant marriage certificate :)

we took our license down to the clerks office the day after we married, and they issued a 'certificate if marriage', which is a photostat of the license on official City Doc paper and stamped it with a raised seal. It cost us $10, and we got it on the spot.

I'm still on vaca, but will file my AOS as soon as I get back this week...I hope it won't take long? I'm only home for 2 days and then back to the beach house in OC....I'm headed into 6 weeks in hotels lol! Anytime now on the house would be nice...please and thank you :) lol...

Krikit that's great on the CC! Who ever thought stuff like that would be such an accomplishment! :)

I have an account that my hubby set up for me, as soon as I get my SSN this week, he'll be able to add my name to the banking and CC...I know eventually I'll build credit...for now, I'll just use his...I don't plan on working, so I imagine that I'll have s need for his credit :) lol!

I got my SSN today! It only took 8 days! Isn't it weird how American numbers are basically just a thick piece of paper? It would be so easy to lose and/or destroy it! The Canadian system of a tough card seems much better... And you're not suposed to carry it? But you should always have the number on you? Weird.

YEAY!!!!

I got mine last week too :)

funny thing....I needed the envelope it came in, to prove to the DMV that it was recently post marked and that I actually curently live at that address...well my ever so wonderful new husband threw it out!!!! I drove all the way to the DMV and was turned away :(

I did get some bank mail and insurance stuff this week, so I need to try again before my I-94 expires...Delaware DMV sucks! lol... I need to apply in DE as well will be staying there for a bit while we get our place ready...then trans to PA...that's when AI will register my car.

Will I get in trouble if I wait to register my car in October? I have to pay State taxes and cannot part with $4000 right now :(

It's nice to use my new US debit card though :)

We closed on our house today, so I get to go see it for the first time on Sunday when I get back from the beach!!! Can you believe I found this place on line from Canada, my husband went to go see it and bought it and I haven't even seen it yet lol! I' excited as he's giving me a decorating budget and letting me do whatever I want... he's gonna love our new bubblegum pink bedroom with leopard carpet! HAHA!

Really? That's odd... But thanks for the tip! I'll keep mine just in case I need it for something. I can't get my CO DL until I have my EAD or GC though, how annoying! You aren't considered a state resident until you have been in state for 90 days... 90 days, just in time for my I-94 to be expired.
