I don't see a problem, on the SS application form, have one of these blocks to check:

U.S Citizen

Legal Alien allowed to work

Legal Alien not allowed to work

Other, see instructions.

I only filled this form once, saving it in Adobe Arcobat format, printed it out, had my wife sign it and took her EAD in with me, she was given a probationary SS card with her SS number on it. Checked Legal Alien allowed to work.

Second time I went in, she received her conditional green card, left the Legal Alien allowed to work box checked, but changed the date of her application, went in with her application and her green card, she received a new card, same SS number, but the probationary status was removed.

Third and should be the last time I went in, took in her original USC certificate, opened her form again, unchecked the Legal Alien allowed to work box, checked the U.S Citizen box and changed the date, and again had her sign it. Oh, the last time, she asked me to drop her maiden name that was stuck between her first and middle name and her married name. That was causing confusion for her, but felt obligated to use it when she first came her to do keeping her records up in her former country, but we changed those records as well and had our marriage registered in her country, her foreign passport is now in her married name, that was no problem with SS.

Each time they took a photo copy of her ID, her EAD card, her green card, then her certificate. The reason I go in for her, the SS office is at our county seat 37 miles from here, I frequency drive there for business, and is only two blocks out of my way. But we don't have to go in, could send in the original documents, that would be the day, may never see them again. When I walked in with either her EAD, LPR cards, or her certificate, I walked out with them.

Each time she received a new card, took less than two weeks, they never took her old cards, her SS number is the same as day one. Each time, took me less than five minutes, sometimes, just two minutes as everything is filled out properly.

So why are you going in without your USC certificate, that is crazy, you need proof as to your current status.

Just one new guy said my wife has to come in person, I quickly pointed to a huge sign on the wall, that says you don't, you can even mail in your application with the documents, but he was also quickly corrected by a co-worker, everything is fine she said. Thank you, have a nice day.

This is what happened when the Govt. misused the intended purpose of SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER/CARD.

SSN wasn't created to track people's life and legal matters but in times, it now becomes the MOST important number you would ever want to protect and obtain.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_security_number

Therefore, SSA office all of the sudden becomes SO VITAL and they got a little bit ahead of themselves with the dumbfound power that they think they possessed.

Relax, what right is always right, no matter how many dumbasses try to disbute with you.

Cheers,

Chuck and Kim

Question is how to deal with these self made gods, gather they tend to put the new people at the window where the work is the most difficult where the older ones, job wise, can sit at desks in the rear and play solitaire all day. Ironically our SS office is right next to a Staples store, that store has a lot of expensive stuff that someone may want to steal, but no guards. But since 9/11 they put in one armed guard in our SS office that doesn't really have anything worth taking. He tells me to take a number, laugh and say, why should I, I am the only one here, but take a number anyway.

In Venezuela, just about any store we hit, that have at least to armed guards, but armed with sticks, not guns, but you don't see that at public buildings.

If there is one person ahead of me, ask to take a seat where I look for things of interest, like that big sign on the wall, you don't have to wait, can mail in your application, but just comment to myself, who would pay that 400 bucks if they lose my wife's certificate. Also had a portrait of GWB, same one as in the USCIS waiting room, can only wonder how many thousands of portraits they print up for all of these offices and what do they do with them. Should check on ebay, could use another target for shooting practice.

When that guy told me, my wife had to show up in person, lots of things crossed my mind, like let's settle this out in the parking lot or is it really true you have to have an IQ of less than ten to get a job here. But I preferred to ask him if he ever read the instructions or that big sign facing him on the wall, if you don't want to wait. But did say, who would pay the four hundred bucks if you lose my wife's certificate. While I did make a nice color copy of it, he still insisted on making his own black streaked copy and his worn out machine. Whatever makes you happy.

You meet all kinds of jerks like this working supposingly as servants of the people, I did comment, hey, between my wifes' employer and her, you are taking 15% of her gross wages out of her paycheck, you are the ones getting her money that the way things are going, she may never get back. It's not like I am coming here to get money!

I did report a smarta$$ from the USCIS to my senators office, and did get a letter of apology and did tell my city treasurer, why can't you say thank you when I paid my huge property tax bill, don't you know that you are being paid my me.

Maybe it's time for a revolution.

Yep, born in the USA, recall having to find my birth certificate when I first applied for an SS card and to get a drivers' license, needed that to get a job when I was 16 years old, needed that birth certificate again when I was drafted, then years later when dealing with the USCIS.

I view my wifes' certificate in the same way as my birth certificate, only need it when dealing with our government.

I use to be a very shy kid, but six years with our military changed all that fighting for the freedom for our country or so I was told. Now use those tactics for fighting for my own freedom. Scare the living ####### out of my wife at times when dealing with idiotic people, but it gets the job done, and when we are done, can be very nice and my wife appreciates that. Even when dealing with idiots in Venezuela, we don't have a monopoly on government employee idiots, seems to be a world wide problem. But know when to stop so I don't get arrested.

I'm not sure if this is true or not, but this is what I think: to let the SSA know that we've already became citizen, the sponsor's responsibility who sponsor us immigrants had came to an end. So when they process unemployment benefits, food stamps, etc etc., the government can't ask for repayment from the sponsor.

Our attorney advised way back then that my wife file an I-864A since her daughter was also involved, my wife had no problem with that. The I-864 does expire at USC, but also with so many work hours, recall around a ten year period.

They really want to make sure if you come here legally, you are not a burden to any type of welfare agency, either public nor private. But we sure can't say the same thing about illegals coming here. This really hits home when you hear about families that kicked off of their health insurance policies when they have a kid with a precondition, just pray that doesn't happen to a kid you brought here. Also hits home when your governor claims next to education, his highest bill is for Medicaid, we know of a lot of kids born from 14 year old illegals that have kids on Medicaid. The laws are working against those that obey the laws of this land, that isn't right.

Please do not turn this thread into a lets bash the illegals I just posted my expirence yesterday at the SSA I did not intend for it to go downhill into lets blame illegals for the state of the USA.

Thanks to all who read my rant at the SSA.

I wasn't bashing illegals, was bashing the part of the same government you are having problems with. We have 15.3% of our wages taken away by SS that is giving you problems when you legally applied for USC and presented all the proof required by them they ask for. You are also paying income taxes on top of this tax as you cannot deduct this tax from your income. And if the time comes when you can get what little benefits that are paid back, you have to pay income taxes again on that amount. Look at line 15a on an IRS 1040.

And since you came here legally, can't depend on any private or public aid if some unforeseen disaster happens to you. Was just commenting that illegals have it better than those who came here legally, that isn't bashing this group of people, they don't make the laws.

Maybe they didn't read the SS5 instructions on page 3 of their own instruction form at www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf.

Maybe they can't even read. Maybe you have to print out a copy of their instructions and read and explain it to them. You may have to hire an interpreter if they can't speak English.
