Nervous about my IR1 Interview in Montreal

I'm sorry if this is all repetitive, but i'd like to be 100% sure.

1. My police check original was sent to the NVC. I have copies of it. Is this going to be enough? I only had 1 original.

Anyone ever go with copies?

2. I have an original long form Birth Certificate from Quebec, but not a Record of an Act. I was under the impression that you could submit either, and on my interview letter, it doesn't say anything about attaining a Record of an Act.

Anyone ever go with just a Birth Cert original? It doesn't need translating either, it's in English.

3. If my interview is for 9am, what time do people suggest I show up? 6:30am seems a bit too early....thoughts?

4. What does the visa that they put in your passport look like? Is it a stamp or sticker? Does it take up a whole page? I'm running out of space in my passport but it's good until 2012. Wondering if I should get a new one before I leave for the US or while i'm in the US. Is the visa still active if you get a new passport before immigrating?

Thanks once again!

M.

Hi,

You haven't filled out your timeline or told us which visa you have applied for, but I will assume IR1/CR1.

You don't need a copy of the police cert - they will already have it.

The doors open at Montreal at 7:30.

The visa covers 1 page. If I were you I would just keep the passport you have an not hassle with a new one. I suppose (but I don't know) that the visa would still be valid if you get a new passport before you leave - but I don't know why you would unless you do not have 1 page available.

They should have whatever documents you sent them, including the police report. Yes the visa takes up a whole page in ur passport. Has your picture on it, and some more info.

Doors open up around 0730, many get their earlier, around 0700 to get in as soon as possible, as it is sort of first come first served, but not really. Others behind you, may get called before you do. NO big bags, or electronics allowed. You go through airport like security, so keep metal objects to a minimum! The interview itself is very very short, usually less than 10 minutes, most of ur time at the consulate is spent waiting Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Sorry.

I put it in the subject title that I'm an I-R1. I filled in my timeline, you are right...long overdue.

So what about the Birth Certificate? Do I also need a Record of an Act for Quebec?

All other information is tremendously helpful.

Thanks so much for your time. It really helps calm the nerves.

We're doing the K1 Visa and have the interview on Thursday. We've got 2 copies of his long-form birth certificate. Just in case. I remember reading somewhere here on VJ that someone did not have copies of the birth certificate and the interviewer was nice enough and went to make a copy. If you do make copies, make sure you have copies of the front AND back! Good luck! :)

Event Date

ROC

9/24/11 - Mailed I-751 packet to CSC

9/26/11 - NOA1 Receipt Date

9/28/11 - Check cashed

Right, it is in the subject :)

here is the official word on Quebec birth certificates:

Quebec: Applicants should obtain "certified copies of an act" from the Direction de l' Etat Civil in Montreal (2050, rue de Bleury, sixth floor, tel:514-864-3900) or the Directeur de l'Etat Civil in Quebec City (2535, boulevard Laurier, Ground Floor, Sainte-Foy, tel:418-643-3900; fax:418-646-3255). Further information, including other locations and information on ordering by mail is available online. Canada Reciprocity Schedule - Dept. of State

That said - NVC has accepted the BC you submitted - so maybe it will be ok. I personally would email Montreal and ask.

Long form is fine but do not make the mistake of showing up with a french version without a notarised translation .... I brought mine in French and they accepted everything but that ...so instead of walking away approved i added an extra 4 weeks wait to the process

Not worth it get it done before you go.
