CR1 Social Security ID?

In looking at the Social Security office docs, it mentions wanting an I-94 as proof of something-or-other, but we're not sure that it applies to Canadians.

We have the stamped Visa, his Canadian driver's license, birth certificate...

So what do we actually *need* to take to them to apply for his SS#?

Coming in with the CR-1, you would use that visa in place of the I-94. Canadians who arrive as a K-1 and others who are on some sort of a work visa would use the I-94 as evidence of their legal status in the US because they are non-immigrants (even if they have immigrant intent). The CR-1 is an immigrant visa and is proof of your legal status once it is activated at the border. No I-94 is needed.

What you need at the SSN office? your Cdn passport with the Visa inside and if ya can fill out an application ahead of time http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html.

I believe I took another piece of ID as well---by the time i went and applied for the SSN, I already had a USA drivers license, but I only recall them looking at the passport. SSN arrived about 1 week after I had applied! And for the record, I had checked off the SSN box on the DS-230, and it never arrived by that method!

I can't remember if we ticked the box -- probably did but it wasn't worth looking.

He only needed his passport/visa. Had the form all filled out. Got a nice "welcome" from the SS person. He'll have it in 5-10 days.

Oh, they told him to make sure his name is on the mailbox or they won't deliver it. We don't have any names on the mailbox. Never have. But that jives with the person who said they should have had a c/o their SO on their mailing address. He gets plenty of mail here as it is and has for some time. They did ask me about it once at the PO itself when I picked up a package for him.

Anyway, it was an efficient morning. He was something like 4th there so it didn't take him long to get in and out. That's nothing like any of my experiences with the SS office! I've waited hours and hours!

And yesteday (4/13) his SS# showed up in the mail! Talk about fast!

So now he's gotten himself a nice bank account. We'll do driver's license, etc. later in the week.

This is going too smoothly.
