And I agree about the "country style ribs"

Mmmmmm country style ribs, cooked out on the back porch over charcoal... Delicious <Homer drool>... Even better if you can get the boneless ones.

Also damn good is mashed potatoes with the skins on, with black pepper, sour cream and Philly cheese. I'd never have thought of that in a million years back home but damn it's good :D

OK, I'd also like to add breakfast burritos to the list. The ones at Maccy D's are tasty enough, so home-made ones at a mom & pop place must be awesome. Nich, I reckon you must get some real good breakfast burritos down your neck of the woods, am I right?

Absolutely! Mendoza's a Mom and Pop Mexican joint is really good, but homemade with fresh flour tortillas are available lots of places.

Haha. Sounds like my marriage. A quick visit to the courthouse, signed all the docs, then my husband dropped me off at home and he went back to work. Very romantic. :hehe: Congratulations, Damian!

Marm: Thanks for all those tasty looking dishes! We like to try new things, can't wait for Nik to get here so we can test them out! (I find that even tasty things are hard to have as left overs for 3 meals a day 5 days in a row...I'm apparently no good at cooking just for one!) I wonder if we should look for/start an off-topic thread for good recipes...

I always sort of thought that one of the solutions for "It just doesn't taste the same!!" was to not try to eat the same things, and try new ones... Of course, sometimes you just get a craving, I suppose. I've never moved countries, so I should probably be quiet on that point!!

I'm curious how the Brits fall on the Mayo vs. Miracle Whip sides, myself. We live in a divided house, so anything calling for one or the other must be made twice, and strict segregation is needed!

Damian, congrats on being married now! :) :)

Something else I'd like to recommend - country style ribs. Basically, 'er indoors is a hillbilly, so we invariably eat hillbilly food (which, apart from vile ###### like biscuits & gravy and grits, is very good.) One of her specialities is country style ribs, which are not so much ribs, more like steaks!

According to her, they're "poor mans' ribs" but quite frankly, you can shove the "rich" alternative (babyback ribs) where the sun don't shine. I gotta a belly-full of country ribs in me, and dey da BOMB!!

Edit: 'er indoors has just told me to tell "y'all" (lol @ hillbilly speak ) that you MUST use Sweet Baby Ray's barbecue sauce, or it don't work. OK then

Biscuits and gravy are THE BEST breakfast food!! Don't judge the whole dish based on what you get at some diner! Really good breakfast sausage and fresh biscuits from scratch taste very different!! I am always disappointed by what I get when it's produced in large quantities.

Grits (and their sister-food Cream of Wheat AKA Farina) are only as good as the stuff you put on/mix in. I hear grits and cheese is popular down south, I eat my cream of wheat with butter and brown sugar!

We over here in America have lots of really good BBQ things. My father cooks country ribs (I like them better too) basted with Secret Sauce that he makes from scratch. I'd tell you how to make it, but then I'd have to kill you...er...I'd also have to know how he does it - I think it changes each time he makes it - a little more liquid smoke or kitchen bouquet, or all out of one ingredient etc...

He's also "famous" for his deviled eggs. These are sort of in the same basket as the secret sauce, though I think the garlic & cyanne pepper amount has steadily increased to the point that they now make you cry...

My own personal weakness is for buffalo wings - they have to be made with Frank's Hot Sauce (SOME similar sauces are acceptable substitutes, but I'm not sure what they are called), or they aren't any good at all. But boy are they bad for you! An entire day's worth of calories in one little order!! I DID miss these when I moved to the midwest for a year - they don't have the stomach for anything approaching spicy in that area.

miracle whip is an unfortunately common condiment in american kitchens.

it taste AWFUL.
