Ever since I've been in New Jersey, I've realized how SCARED people of all shapes, sizes, genders and classes are of the police. Terrified, in fact. Maybe it depends on what state you live in or where in your state you live, but here in New Jersey police officers come in large numbers.

It often seems that they are not there to help you because they have such a long history of corruption and violence.

This morning while driving to work, I noticed there were 5 state troopers hiding out on the highway waiting to pull people over in what could not have been more than 1-2 mile radius.

My husband often tells me stories about him being pulled over for having a broken tail light and ending up with 3 or 4 tickets at once. One time, years ago, he was visiting his mother in her town and his friend that was a police officer in the town called him and told him to be careful because he had heard over the police radios that they saw a white toyota truck they thought was suspicious. (the exact truck my husband was driving at the time)

Any ways, even I am now fearful of the police. There are so many officers in this state that you can't go anywhere without knowing they are hiding out somewhere. It's impressive that on many of New Jersey's highways they have actually constructed them so that police officers can have good hiding spots!

Now, if you are committing a crime they obviously have every reason to arrest/ticket you. I'm just saying that it appears they are out to get you instead of out the help you around where I live. I never felt this way in Canada and never had a ticket until I came here to the US.

Just some thoughts this morning...

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Maybe to P.A. in 4 or 5 years once the recession ends and the housing market starts to go up. We'd like to make some money off of our place.

I'd still work in NJ though because the salaries are much higher here.

It's just scary really.

Well I've drivin in every state but Alaska so I can definatly tell you I do see a lot more police presence on the roads in PA and Jersery then others. Though I get more speeding tickets in Kansas then any other state.

New Jersey I just see them on the turnpike a lot when I'd drive out to that part of the country. More then most states on the interstate. Never got a ticket in Jersey though to date...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

Yep.. those "traps" are horrible.. I get angry when I see them, because they CAUSE more accidents then anything with people slamming on brakes etc.

We have city police here that i have NO respect for.. they run red lights (without sirens on), they have blasted sirens at me as I walked (and grinned about it), they COULD have waited until I was passed the car, but no.. they had to get their giggles in.. The REFUSE to stop people from doing dangerous things, and generally are all the negative stereotypes of the police force. I've always had a high level of respect for police officers, but since moving here to the Northeast, I'm appalled at what is called "law enforcement".. truly is stupefying..

I have to say the worst stretch of highway we've encountered on the East Coast has to be either 95 North of Bangor (hubby's had at least 2 tickets over $150.00).. there is NO traffic at all, but the troopers have a lock down on the highway and won't let you go over the speed limit AT ALL.. and if you have out of town plates they hunt you down, and in South Carolina we always sloowwwww down.. there they can throw you in jail for speeding (or is it North Carolina?).. not sure.. but those are our 2 "watch out" spots.

:)

Lots of trasp on the new jersey Turn Pike! As i said last week, my wife and I counted over 100 police cars driving by us in a 10 minute span on the way to RI last summer!! Must have been soem type of exercise, but was just cop car after cop car, and motor cycles, crazy! DC is the same downtown, cops every where, police State I tell ya! Doesnt bother me though as I dont break the law, and if they catch me for speeding, well that is my fault, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Yes, true flames...but you shouldn't be afraid of them!

I'm literally afraid of them. Small town police here are also worse than big city police. They have nothing to do all day so they will go after the smallest things.

My town has about 7 thousand people in it. I got a ticket a few months back for "obstruction of view" because I had my parking permit hanging where my rear view mirror is

Cooper jumped on and started sniffing the guy on the ground. NO PO thought that was funneh.

I have heard that New Orleans has some of the most corrupt police officers in the United States besides places like LA:lol:

When Katrina hit, they were actually looting as well.

True. There is a lot of corruption here. Police, politicians.

There was one Politician who was caught with a sh!tload of stolen money in his freezer. He was actually re- elected again! #######?

So corrupt! Although, NJ isn't much better so I sympathize with you.

The chief of police in Hoboken, NJ had pictures plastered of him all over the internet with Hooter's girls from down in New Orleans when he went to go help with the clean up and stability of the region.

He let all the girls hold his massive gun and take pictures with it. I'm pretty sure he didn't get in trouble.

Louisiana state police can pull you over and search your car without a warrant. Made for a few interesting road trips for Mardi Gras in university. I went to university in S. Carolina and will concur that they are very strict about speeding. I remember one time in Myrtle Beach, they had a checkpoint on the main drag to check that everyone that was driving had shoes on. You can get a ticket for driving barefoot aparently. LA cops don't really have the reputation for being corrupt as much as the stereotype is of them being racist. I've seen it happen, but at the same time, I'm not going to lump them all together. My experiences with officers are that the ones out in the country, or in sleepy white washed suburbs are bored to tears and are looking for some "action".
