RFE's

:crying:

I called the NVC this evening and the automated system said we had RFE. So I called to speak to a live person. Now I am so unhappy here are the RFE's

1) When we got married in San Luis Obispo, Ca. We ordered an extra marriage certificate - one for each of us. I sent in mine - they both looked identical. They don't like that one - so I will need to send in the other one. Both were on offical raised paper with offical seals from the State of California and the county of San Luis Obispo. I am not sure what to do if they don't like the other one.

2) I ordered the long birth certificate from Saskatchewan with the offical seal it cost $ 25.00 I guess that is not the right one. I will order the $ 50.00 one tomorrow by fax.

3) I ordered 2 marriage certificates from my previous marriages in Alberta they are not a full 8.5 x 11.5, but rather 6 x 8 size. I am not sure what to order now - the large wall size one or the Certified Photocopied print of the original Registration of Marriage.

The only thing I am sure of is the birth certificate so I will proceed with that, but will wait on the marriage certificates from Alberta until I get the actual email or snail mail on the RFE.

Needless to say I am downhearted at the moment.

Thanks for listening,

Janet

I'm not much help since I'm not familiar with that state or those province documents, but just wanted to say I'm sorry to hear you are so discouraged. Hang in there- all you can do is work as quickly as possible to make it right. I had an RFE too and was so discouraged, but you will get to the finish line soon! Keep positive :)

What were your expectations re what would satisfy the immigration officials? Were you just stabbing in the dark? Or going on official info?

Thanks to-hope. And yes Itza, I had certified, stamped government issued documents to send in from both Canada and the USA so, no I was "not taking a stab" in the dark. However, I will make sure that once I get the proper documentation in and approved by NVC that the Canadians in this forum will know which birth certificate from Saskatchewan is necessary and what Marriage Certificates from Alberta are required. Good luck on your journey also.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Just off the top of my head, I wonder if they really need a copy of all of these things. For example - we got an RFE for a date missing on the DS-230 - now if you read the RFE it says allllll this stuff about police certificates. What they are ACTUALLY saying is that if you messed up the dates on the form AND therefore there were periods of time in there that would have required a police certificate, then you will need to get another one of those too.

The reason I bring this up is that you mention you sent in the long form birth certificate, that is in fact the one that they want. Your marriage certificate sounds right too.

What does sound unusual to me is that you sent in your Marriage Certificate from your previous marriage in Alberta. They do not request this at NVC - they want to see your Marriage termination certificate from that previous marriage - the one in Alberta is that one on the flimsy little piece of paper.

So basically what I am saying is - the operator at NVC can really only see what you will see on the RFE and they may well be reading it wrong - before proceeding any further I would call NVC and ask to speak to a supervisor and ask the questions as above about your current marriage and birth certificates in fact being the right ones and if perhaps all you are missing is the Alberta termination of marriage document.

I agree with Trailmix. Don't listen to the interpretations of the operator. And don't be concerned with responding to anything itzallgood posts. I think he just talks to hear himself speak.

I did send in the long birth certificate with all the parent's information, live births etc. Flames as I called Saskatchewan and asked which one was needed for immigration to the USA. I did send in the flimsy piece of paper for the Alberta divorce from the Queen's Bench in Lethbridge, and one from the Superior Court here in BC, but because I have been married twice I was told I had to show marriage certificates also thus the need for them.

Calling and asking to speak to a supervisor is a good idea - I did not know that was an option I wonderf if they would have my file in front of them?

Today will be a better day I am sure with my new glasses :)

Thanks

Janet

An update from today.

I spoke with a very nice woman at NVC late this afternoon. She's going to have my file pulled and looked at by a supervisor - this was her suggestion (I like it better when they think of it, rather than me asking).

She agreed with me that my Alberta marriage certificates, which are 8 x 7.5 inches are what is required as they are the largest size available.

They want a computer-generated birth certificate - I explained that being born in 1957 this might not be possible as they were handwritten and that I send in a long form certified photographic print of the registration on file at Vital Statistics, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. She did wonder since I received this form in 2002 maybe they are computer generated, I said I would call Saskatchewan in the morning and find out. If they will not do that she said to see if they would put something in writing, and to send that in to accompany my certified copy already received.

There appears to be a Divorce Certificate missing from my file - she cannot tell me which one and the supervisor will be able to tell which one it is from actually handling the paperwork.

This process will take 10 -15 days to complete.

I feel better today, but hate being in limbo.

Janet
