Original or Notarized copy to NVC?

Hello all,

I've read it over and over again in NVC posts that we should send original or certified copy of documents to NVC. I have both: Original marriage certificate and birth certificate plus their notarized copy. I was originally planning to send originals to NVC but I've been warned by many friends/relatives of mine against it.

I wanted to know what your suggestions are. Original or notarized copy?

Has anyone sent notarized copy of birth/marriage certificate and got RFE?

Our consulate is in Chennai, India. Has anyone gotten their original copies back recently from Chennai during their interview time?

Why risk the RFE? Can't you get replacement originals if they are not returned to you at the interview?

@ Eric - It's pain to get things done in India but at the same time I want to avoid RFE.... It's not impossible, of course.. By the way, Congrats on case complete, I can't wait to say that myself :D

If I were you I send originals because they will not accept notarized copy. Why take chance?? You will get your originals back at the time of interview.

I would suggest to send originals as well, since if they do not accept notarized copy than getting RFE, wasting time and lots of regrets in the end, "saying why didn't i send the originals" (note: my own personal opinion). In my husband's case, i send all the originals and we got all back at the time of interview from Mumbai consulate. I am not sure about Chennai consulate.

We sent all originals and got out of nvc no probs. I think its a hit and miss on the notarized copy, you may get rfe may not, but why risk it? I am also hoping we will get all originals back at interview time, if not I have copies for the time being and will deal with getting originals from the individual authorities later. Good luck.

Thanks everyone. I'll use originals too :) I did confirm with my hubby and he said it is not that difficult to get another copy of original if there is a need.

Me too had send originals to NVC on 27 of march and i have confirmed with NVC they told that it would be handed over to me at the time of interview..My consulate is chennai as well

NVC requires the originals. With the Originals you should send a regular photocopy of documents like the marriage and birth certificates.
