My accountant says I cannot apply for a TIN for my wife since she has never been to the US. His recommendation to me was to file as single and then do MFJ going forward.

GS - Can you send me the number you called, so I can get this straightened out??

I have a TIN and I have never lived in the US...for the last 2 yrs my hubby has filed as MFS.

Queue you might want to look into that

Yeah, im going to look into that, but filing MFS means I pay more in taxes. My accountant states that for the year I got married I am still allowed to file Single as a grace period. I guess I need to call the IRS and confirm.

My hubby cribs that he pays more taxes filing MFS but for the purpose of immigration thought it would be a better show :)

I'm gonna get back to work now :P

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive,and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

She is eligible...Like I said I have one. The problem is if you plan to file before her interview it might be cutting it too short.

She is eligible...Like I said I have one. The problem is if you plan to file before her interview it might be cutting it too short.

Many people do it this way.

If you just dont want to file MFS, for refund and convenience reasons; then I suggest you just file single and have an explanation ready for the CO.

Your wife can tell him/her that you didnt obtain the ITIN timely and that you didnt want to file for an extension or whatever.

I filed HH because my husband doesn't have a SS#. I couldn't get the EIC without both SS#'s. That was a difference of $2000.00 I didn't want to wait for the refund either. I just filed electronically like I always do. Next year he will have a SS# and we will be fine.

Thanks. I just spoke to the IRS, and 2 different agents said she is eligible for a TIN, because her and I are agreeing to file a joint return. I have to see if I qualify for head of household, but I don't think I qualify.

You wouldnt qualify then. BUT, once your wife finally gets here and you guys have some little que's...you can file HOH :P
