I have a quick question on filling out the DS-160 form. My fiance's address has swedish characters in it - I couldn't tell if he needs to spell those differently on the form or if that is just if you have those characters in your name? For example, the official site says to write them "aa" "ae" "oa" etc....

I actually wrote just an a or just o, i hope that will go through anyway!!

I would write the transliteration as indicated on the site. I don't think it will create any postal problems (hopefully), but I did have the Danish postal service deliver something to the complete other side of the city because someone from America wrote "a" instead of "aa" or å. I guess it messed up their automatic postal sorter. It came back with a note on it from the person who received it in error,

It is also something to be careful with that people get right in names when you move to America - it can be bothersome and create issues when someone uses "a" instead of "aa".

2" by 2", roughly 5x5cm - so to answer myself (checked travel.state and the embassy (multiple ones even).

When we filed the petition, i wrote a and o instead of ä and ö!! They haven't said anything abt it, i did that also on ds160, i hope it goes through anyway!!

Hi all!

Does anyone know of an authorized translation service in Stockholm? We need to get a couple forms translated and have had a hard time finding one that is an authorized service.

Also, thanks for the feedback on the spelling! In one area it said it only mattered if the letters were in your name, not the address. I guess we will go with "aa" just to be safe!

Regarding photos - what we discovered was that the photos that most people take for official documents in Sweden (using the photobooths) were actually smaller than 2x2. We ended up scanning the photo in and enlarging it to 2x2 just to be safe!

They don't look exactly the same, the Swedish passport photos are a bit more elongated and smaller, while the American ones are super square. Any decent photo place will be able to do either version for you. If you're doing it yourself and want the American version, this website is awesome for making sure you have the right dimensions.

I don't know if they have the same, but at the train/bus stations in DK they have photobooths and you can select "American" immigration as an option for the size.

Scartwright - if they are for US immigration I believe you can translate them yourself and attach a form saying that you are fluent in both languages.

When I have the case #, next step then would be to fill out the DS-160, right? Then what? Do I need to schedule my own interview like I did for my F-1 visa or how does this work? Guess paying that DS-160 fee at the bank is the same as the F-1 process.

For us it worked like this: US fiance called NVC, got case #. The next day, he got a physical letter telling him to tell me to fill out the DS-160. Once that was done, he got an email from the embassy with the interview appointment and all the other information needed. What you refer to as the "DS-160 fee" is the Visa fee, I assume, since there's no fee paid in connection to the DS-160. The embassy will schedule an appointment for you.

Also, most of this information has been discussed on these forums quite recently. You can get a lot of information just by reading back a few pages. ETA: or by looking at the Stockholm Embassy info site here.

The photo that is on my green card is one I actually took myself in the bedroom of my apartment back in Västerås, Sweden. I used a tripod (kamerastativ).

There are restrictions for the photos, for example concerning the background, the distance between the person's eyes etc. I believe those restrictions can be found in the FAQ on this website.

I found a website and processed the photo there, then took it to a local photo lab and had it developed. Worked like a charm.

As for changing your address… when I moved about a year ago I paid https://www.adressandring.se/privatperson to have my mail forwarded to my new home in Pittsburgh, PA. I don't remember exactly how much it was but I think it was like 1600 SEK for six months.

I assume some mail will be sent to you, such as tax forms, papers from Swedish authorities and such. I don't think other mail will be forwarded automatically (like say a bill from your cable company or something like that).
