I love the 'bar-hair' comment - so true. Thank god Virginia is passing the same type of non-smoking laws as in ON...will be soo much better.

Anything that can be washed will be fine...not sure what to do about books etc.... although a good thorough airing out will help. have you tried the Good Housekeeping site? Heloise is the clean tip chick.

Not sure how to get the smell out, other then probably over time it'll fade. In our place wife has to smoke outside regardless of the weather with the door shut so it doesn't come into the house. No smoking in either car either.

Many many years back when I'd smoke on the weekends drinking I'd visit her place and she always smoked inside her apt, so we both did. Once we got married we made that rule no smoking in the new place or cars. All the smell over time of the furniture and cloths faded over time and now you can't smell anything inside the house...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

invest in one of those air filters that are advertised to remove cigarette smoke from the air. I don't recall the name but it might be an idea to use it while things are 'airing' out and getting rid of the smoke smell. I am so glad that Joe doesn't smoke - he used to before I met him - as it would be a deal-breaker for us. I am highly allergic to cigarette smoke - my throat starts to close up so that I can't talk and then have trouble breathing. I have a hard time even if one person is smoking in the vicinity. And there is nothing worse than the smell of stale cigarette smoke!

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I'll second third and forth the febreeze. It is the only thing that actually removes odors, everything else just covers them and makes it smell like smoke +:fillin scent here: yuck

they make auto febreeze, but i dont know if it is different at all or if they just package it differently and sell it at a higher price heh

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

HEPA filters.

I don't have one of them, but my parents both smoke and, for Christmas, I got a "Vick's Cool Mist Humidifier" which has a filter in it. It takes out pretty much everything in the air. I don't know how much it was, but it shouldn't be hard to find. I've found it on Amazon. It's made by Kaz.

March 13, 2009--Visa application handed to the post office.

March 16, 2009--Visa application received by Vermont Service Centre at 11:01 am. Let's hope that he actually put in everything he thought he did and they don't send it back to us!!

March 23, 2009--Got the whole package back. The cheque was apparently filled out incorrectly, thanks to the fact that his moronic flatmates helped him and instructed him wrong for the first cheque he ever filled out.

March 30, 2009--NOA1

August 12, 2009--Touched

September 1, 2009, received Package 1 from Montreal--but where is our NOA2???

Don't waste $ on febreeze, buy an enzymatic spray, walmart sells one in the pet aisle to get rid of pet stains and smells, its is in a bottle similar to febreeze and roughly the same price, it works much better because instead of just covering up the smell and having stuff smell like old lady flowers and stale smoke the enzymes work to break down the actual molecules that are causing the smell.

Febreze like all air fresheners must masks the cigarette smell by producing a smell of it's own. You need to actually clean the fabric in his car to get rid of the smell. Do you own a steam cleaner? I have two. A full size Bissel for home and a Little Green ProHeat for the car. The full size Bissel does have attachments for doing a car too. But it's a bit bulky.

Regardless, once you steam clean the interior of the vehicle and actually see how much black gunk comes out of the interior, you'll realize that air spray alone won't cut it. Once you've steam cleaned, you should be good.

Since you're moving to Michigan, you probably won't have a gunked up air conditioner in the car like we do down south. Down here, all cars have it set on MAX A/C (recirc) pretty much all year round. So if the person smokes, the coils get gunked up with nicotine, mold, dust, pollen, etc. Our weather doesn't help. (Hot and really humid). The best way to clean the coils if you do have a mold smell is with a product called "BG Frigi-Clean." However, if you don't want to go to the hassle of that, you can simply spray some Lysol into the fresh air grille by the windshield wipers. System running on NORM A/C (fresh) while you do that.

But honestly, just stream cleaning the interior tends to air out the ventilation system. Running it on anything besides MAX will bring in fresh air as well.

Clothes? Once they go in the washing machine, they'll lose the smell. Clotheslines are amazing for having nice smell. Books? Not much you can do there. Aside from that, not much to do except wipe things down with soapy water.

I wouldn't worry about his car wafting the smell into yours. Do you both leave your windows open? Even then, I doubt it would happen. At least nothing that wouldn't air itself out after 10 seconds driving down the road with a window open. Could always leave the garage window open a bit if you really want. Not a bad idea to get some outside air into the garage anyways. Allows any excess CO to vent itself rather than try to force it's way into your home.

Ahhh, steam cleaner! I could use the "ruse" that I want to clean out my car after the salt etc. and perhaps we could do his, too! You know, to make the cars look nice before the wedding & alll... he, he, he... sneaky but with good intentions!
