I always said that too.... until I discovered they don't bug me like I thought they would. Plus I like having no panty lines. Mind you, I'm back to boy shorts now that I've gained some American weight.

Oh my, what is it with the American weight curse? I realized I've gained 5 LBS in a little over 4 months. I have NOT changed my eating habits at all, and I have been exercising more in fact here. At home, I was busy with work and didn't work out much but here, not working and all, I go to the gym at least 5 days a week! What is it with this place and weight gain!? My clothes all still fit, but some jeans are a tad TOO tight.

Maybe it's the being married theory... I've heard once you're married, you let your guard down trying to impress your SO, and you relax/eat more and work out less. You snack more, eat out in restaurants more, etc. It's like the freshman 15 but the married 15

For all you ladies out there.... Have any of you tried alternative methods of birth control, like a diaphram or sponge or anything not hormonal. I have been on the pill quite some time, and my doctor told me today it's been too long and I should really go off it. Too long meaning over 10 years. Unfortunately I have early onset of osteoperosis, which is unusual in someone of my age. He thinks over the years the hormones have been making my bone density go down, along with other things of course. So after this pack I need to stop the pill, and I don't really want to resort to the drugstore alternative, if you know what I mean. If anyone has other suggestions / forms of BC they may use that would be great!

I can't believe I have osteo, I thought that was a grandma disease. He said it's usually in post menopausal women. I am going to be taking a ton of supplements to try and get my bones back to a healthy level.

Oh dear. So sorry you have osteo. I used an IUD. No pills, no drugs. I was very happy with it.

My Mom suggested IUD too.... maybe I'll look into that. I just don't want to be on hormones anymore, if the long term use of it caused my osteo that really sucks.

I'm planning to get an IUD within the next month. I've also been told that I have to get off hormonal birth control but I'm allergic to the spermacides in the sponge and am nervous that I'd screw up with diaphrams. I used to think that you couldn't use an IUD if you hadn't had children but that is no longer true. There are two types of IUD, one uses copper to prevent pregnancy and the other uses progesterone. Almost all of the progesterone remains in the uterus but a very small amount of it does get into the bloodstream. The brands are Paragard and Mirena. I'm going to a gynecologist on March 31st to discuss this further. I can let you know what she says if you like.

You should check with your insurance to see what forms of birth control they cover. Luckily, mine covers IUDs.

Thanks Catherine! I will check with my insurance company, I never even thought about that part and them possibly covering IUD. Sure, if you don't mind to send me a PM and let me know how it goes for you! Maybe the next step is to go see a gyno.

I can't believe I have osteo, I thought that was a grandma disease. He said it's usually in post menopausal women. I am going to be taking a ton of supplements to try and get my bones back to a healthy level.

I have an IUD (now called IUC). I read that it is the #1 form of birth control used world wide. I chose the IUD when I was nursing my second daughter because I did not want to get pregnant but I did not want to subject her to any hormones. There are two kinds of IUDs- Mirena (hormone, progesterone based) and ParaGard (no hormones, uses copper).

I have the ParaGard because it does not use any hormones. My IUD will last me for 10 years. I've had it since 12/2005, and except for the heavy periods (which are not always heavy), it has been great!

My sister had an IUD also, removed it, and conceived very shortly after and now has a son! The only negative of the IUD that I've experienced is that it can cause VERY heavy periods (if you go with the one without hormones, the progesterone acts like the pill/depo shot and makes your periods lighter and shorter).

They don't recommend IUDs for women who have not had a baby before because there is a chance that it could tear your uterus (thus preventing a future pregnancy) and your body may reject it (since your uterus has never carried a baby before it might reject the "foreign" object). Your doctor would know what the risk % might be.

I would talk to your doctor about it because in my opinion is is hassle-free, effective (99.9%), hormone-free, and permanent until it is removed by your doctor.

As a side note. . .

Are you considering having children? You might want to think about when you would want to start your family. Women over the age of 35 (I see you are 29) are considered "higher-risk," so now might be the best time to start (no offense to women over 35, my mom was 36 when she had me). Also, if your husband can afford for you to stay home, you might want to start having your family now. When I had my daughters, I was surprised that we could make it on one income. Many of my friends went from full-time careers to being stay-at-home-moms! I had to go back to work when my kids' dad left, but most of my friends are still enjoying staying at home with their pre-schoolers/babies!

It's just a thought.

My insurance covered the "insertion fee" of $200, but wouldn't pay for the actual IUD which was $400. So make sure you ask!

Arabella,

Thanks for the detailed info. I am 29, and we definitely want children, in about 2 years. I've even considered it now, but we've just married and I sort of want to enjoy married life for a few years, just the 2 of us.... But if it happened we'd welcome it with open arms. I think I'm going to make a gyno appt, obviously I don't want it to effect my chances of getting pregnant so I'd like to discuss it with him.

Also, I really want to be able to stay home with my kid(s). The mat leave here is really ridiculous and I cannot imagine going back to work after 6 weeks or however long it may be. Right now, we are getting by fine on my husband's income so I think I'll be OK to stay at home for a few years after having a baby.
