I don't feel sorry for them. But I guess I'm a bit of a b1tch when it comes to that stuff.

I have seen many young people come in who are dressed neatly and nicely and are ready to apply for a job, they are the ones who get hired. It's the people who don't make the effort who won't get a job.

It just reminds me of those people from Ontario on welfare who would bring in their job search forms for you to sign, they didn't really want the job they just needed to fill their quota of signatures so they could get their cheque.

I agree with that.... first impressions really matter. At my old job, a younger girl came in for an interview for the receptionist position. Well receptionists are generally the first person you see, you want them to look nice. She came for the interview in flip flops, a tank with her bra showing and tattered jeans. UMMMM no matter how well she did in the interview, there was no way she was going to be hired based on that first impression.

Omg so one of the brides just called but the events planner was out and about, on property but not at her desk. This girl has called numerous times and keeps asking for her and we've all noticed. This time i just told her that the events planner is away from her desk...

Well she just said...

Yea well my fiance beat the ####### out of me lastnight and I just got out of the hospital so our wedding is off, I need to speak to my wedding planner, not her machine I need to tell her this...

and then she starts crying and I am sitting here getting all teary eyed too!

Anyways I just put this in the vent thread because it was sad. I hate guys like that.

I am glad she found out that he's a douche now rather than later. :(

Wow..I worked at a Women's shelter for two years before I moved down here last month, and it's so sad to hear these stories. I hope she can find help, at least someone to talk to to get her to the next steps.

I always felt good helping these women out, but I worry about people all the time now :(

Do you know what annoys me??

People who CALL to ask if we're hiring. If you can't get off your lazy a$$ to come in and speak with someone then you aren't able to get up in the morning and come to work.

I just asked someone what was stopping them from coming in and filling out an application and she said: "Well I don't want to come all the way there if you're not hiring"

It's called EFFORT, employers like to see it. No, we're not hiring. Bye. Seriously.

You old fashioned gal you :hehe:

I just notice it seems to be the norm with so many people... whatever happened to getting dressed up and going out and actually applying?

I have noticed people just come in with their street clothes too and ask for an application. This tells me a lot about that person.

It also bothers me when someone wants an application and then asks for a pen. You are going out and applying for a job... BRING A PEN!

First impressions matter, especially when looking for a job.

I have put X's on so many applications because of the way people look when they come in or if they ask for a pen.

YES! Those things piss me off to no end as well! ESPECIALLY the pen thing.

And I have a few others things that all relate to the "first impression" thing that piss me right the hell off...

- People who have incorrect spelling/grammar/formatting - or even simple typos on their resumes. That drives me batty. Bah. If people can't be bothered to proofread the paper that is supposed to convince me to hire them, then I can't be bothered to read beyond the errors. I don't care how terrible someone is at spelling, or how terrible their written communication skills are. Those things aren't important for the people I hire (customer service reps for a video store... not a very complicated job), because the job doesn't involve any writing, typing or spelling. They only need to have good verbal communication skills, a friendly personality, a good work ethic, and a working knowledge of the freakin' alphabet... but it's really not hard to proofread a resume, or even to have a friend or family member review it to offer suggestions and/or correct errors.

- People who interrupt a customer/employee conversation just to hand in a resume (or ask for an application), rather than waiting for 30 seconds for the employee to finish their transaction.

- People who butt in line in front of customers to hand in their resume, and think that it's acceptable because they aren't renting or buying anything. It's a customer-oriented job! You don't have to actually care about the customers to do the job, but you certainly have to be mindful of them and at least pretend to care!

- People who ask if they "really need to bother filling out the 'employment history' portion of the application form, because that information is included on their resume". Ummm... if you would like to be considered for employment, then yes! You need to fill it out. (This isn't even just me being picky... they need to fill out that information and sign the form in order for us to be allowed to contact their previous employers.)

I think that's all I've got for now, although all of that made me think of the funniest resume that I've ever seen at my job... it had no punctuation or structure to it, and the phrase "titty bar" was used 4 or 5 times. It was awesome.

I am new to this thread and i never felt the need to vent before. but i felt like i need to B!tch somewhere b/c it really frustrates me that there's too many things happening and a lot of $$$ is going out and my employment is in a shi!!y state b/c my boss is crazy stressed or bipolar or something and greedy that he wants to fire everyone ... "just like that" b/c he is sick of the stress. its not even our fault!!! He cant stop working or just relax. He emails everyone at like 1am!!! and calls me after hours (but i stopped answering his calls and ignores his rude messages) he already cut most employees hours down (that we actually need at work). He is not paying some staff b/c he thinks they didnt do a good job and dont deserve to be paid or paid the amount they worked or deserve. he threatens everyone's employment if we dont change or mold ourselves to his views. And on top of that we are not even hit by the recession!!! and he had to cut my hours down and take my commissions away so it screws up all my reception plans and immigration plans. And any problems that rise up even the smallest things like a paper on the floor is sitting there for 1 hour sets him off. I feel like im going to get fired soon. He is like a ticking time bomb and I feel like its putting so much stress on having to get my visa fast b/c i'm sure he hates everyone even tho he needs us right now, he's not thinking right, he wants to make a drastic change in the business and one person who is his right hand man is the only person that is standing up to him (on behalf of everyone) and he is the only one holding the company together basically. I told the 2nd boss i preferred to get my CR1 visa but he told me if the K3 arrives first to just take it b/c its about to get even worse as he doesnt know if the owner will blow up any time or do something crazy. gggggrrrrrrrrrrrr. talk about trying to transition my life. Anyways. thanks for reading my babble.

It's called EFFORT, employers like to see it. No, we're not hiring. Bye. Seriously.

I can see their point-of-view, however. Why put on a suit and drive halfway across town only to find there are no openings? That's hardly efficient, considering the overall cost in both money and time. Most employers I know like efficiency.

I'd definitely call first or at least send in a resume. If they want to interview me, they'll invite me. I'd follow up with a phone call, as well, but there's simply no point in arriving at a company's doorstep without knowing if they're hiring or not. I'd imagine that would appear desperate to employers and very few employers want to hire desperate people.

I just notice it seems to be the norm with so many people... whatever happened to getting dressed up and going out and actually applying?

As I previously wrote, it's a waste of time and money to job hunt without knowing who is hiring. If I know ahead of time which company is hiring, then I'd apply while looking presentable.

I wouldn't wear a t-shirt and jeans while applying. Even when I applied -- and subsequently appeared for an interview -- at a very well-known Canadian electronics store, I still dressed in a suit. I knew I'd never need to wear anything so formal when working there, but I figured doing such would present a good impression and show I was serious about the job.

I've never gone to any job interview without a pen. That would seem unprepared at best and at worst, appear completely clueless and lazy.

Wow, this guy DOES sound like a ticking time bomb! I think it's time to talk to him one-on-one and let him know how you're feeling! He might not even be aware of how his behaviour affects others.

I'd report your company to the labour department in Canada. I'm not sure what you have worked out with him as far as your contract, whether you are salaried, hourly, work on commission, etc. but there is only so much they can do to you before they are violating labour laws.

But there are people who do get in their cars and come over and talk to us, I work on a golf course so a lot of them are summer students. The ones who make the effort are the ones who get the job. You can call in, but I will tell you we're not hiring and so will everyone else I work with. I never found it acceptable to call and ask if we're hiring. The way people ask too, "Ya'll are hiring?" or something like that.

Regardless our seasonal staff fills up quite fast and with many great people. Its a great place to work, its a shame some people can't prove that they want a job bad enough to get up and go out and look for one. Also if they went on our website they could easily find out the positions we're hiring for. OH and I use the phone a lot to call members, so when I have to put a call on hold because someone wants to ask me if we're hiring, I get a little annoyed. :P

My Vent for the day....

The Governor of New Jersey is considering any household that makes between approx. $80,000 and $150,000 to be "middle class". Maybe in Idaho you can consider that middle class. My husband and I probably make about $115,000 gross right now a year and we are living pay check to pay check.

How can you be considered middle class at that yearly income rate when people pay 10-20 thousand dollars a year in property taxes?

Any ways, being considered middle class now we aren't eligible for a property tax rebate or will be able to deduct our taxes on our state tax return next year.

So what did I do? I joined a campaign with thousands of other New Jerseyians that are sending in empty wallets to the Governor's office with the words "There's nothing left!"

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard
