USCIS Meets Another Milestone in Eliminating FBI Name Check Backlogs

Name Checks Pending More Than Six Months Now Completed

WASHINGTON—U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced today that, working in close partnership with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the backlog for FBI name checks pending more than six months has been eliminated. This is the fourth milestone met by the agency as part of its joint plan with the FBI to completely eliminate the backlog of pending name checks.

Just 16 months ago, more than 349,000 name checks were pending; of that, nearly 150,000 had been pending for more than six months. All USCIS requests pending for six months or more as of February 28, 2009, have now been responded to by the FBI’s National Name Check Program (NNCP).

In April 2008, USCIS and the FBI established milestones prioritizing work based on the age of the pending name check. Priorities included processing all name checks pending more than three years by May 2008 (the FBI had already eliminated all cases pending more than four years); those pending more than two years by July 2008; and those pending more than one year by November 2008.

USCIS and FBI are on schedule to meet the next two goals: all name checks requests pending longer than 90 days to be completed by May 30, 2009 and, by the end of June 2009, the FBI will complete 98 percent of USCIS name check requests within 30 days and process the remaining two percent within three months. USCIS and the FBI will continue to focus on sustaining a rigorous and efficient screening of each name check request.

Elimination of the name check backlog is an example of USCIS’ commitment to making timely decisions about immigration applications and petitions, while maintaining the security and integrity of America’s immigration system.

I HOPE THOSE OF US WHO ARE STUCK IN SECURITY CHECKS WILL GET OUR NO2 SOON.

Given computerization and the ability to flag those that require extra processing I do believe this is a very attainable goal. Like many going through this process we are seeing huge steps made by the USCIS and FBI to get this train moving in the right direction. Citizens and immigrants alike are paying for a service and like everything you are paying for expect a reasonable amount of customer satisfaction. Given the improvements that have been made and no doubt there are more in the pipeline we shall start to see an immigration process that is:-

a/. More streamlined b/. Ensures the integrity of the immigration process c/. Provides a satisfactory service to it's customers

For far too long immigration has been an issue that no one wants to tackle...it's not a vote grabber and indeed can be an extremely contentious issue. We now have an administration in place whom is tackling all these issues irrespective of how contentious or potentially unpopular they are. As you have probably guessed I am a fan of Barrack Obama whom I firmly believe is a doer, who walks the talk and if the US population as a whole is behind him will ultimately achieve some wonderful results not only for the US but also for the world as a whole.

US citizens involved in the immigration process have for far too long have been (apart from a relative few) silent in regards to this cumbersome immigration process and have suffered (many for years) to be estranged from their family members. You indeed have a voice and need to be heard for I know in most instances US citizens are indeed vocal should they be dissatisfied with the service they receive.

Immigration reform is on the cards, for the US has a huge illegal immigration situation that needs to be resolved and quite frankly deportation is not only impractical but is also undesirable. The chaos that would ensue and the economic costs involved would be counter productive.

I spoke to someone the other day who knew of a Mexican illegal immigrant worker on a fruit farm in Florida he was deported for being illegal and then but 10 days later was phoning from Houston inquiring as to whether he could have his job back. The facts are the borders are huge and the cost of policing them are enormous. Putting a huge fence up....well best i don't go there. Securing the US border is indeed a major challenge and I am sure the frustrations of dealing with such huge areas is not easy to say the least.

Personally I feel amnesty is the way forward for it is only by knowing who you have in your country can you more effectively police it. As for the mechanism required I am sure there are plenty of ways in which this could be achieved, the main thing is to have the trust of the current illegal immigrants so that if they turn themselves in they would not be immediately deported.

I know this will possibly upset those of us who strive to do immigration legally and feel that we are indeed persecuted for doing as such. But that doesn't change what is and has been a situation in the US for years. We can feel more secure in our beds that we are not going to have a lady or gentleman from ICE knock on the door and send us packing back to wherever we came from.

I do hope what I wrote here generates some constructive criticism, for it is but a personal opinion and I have been known to be wrong Ha!
