Hi,

I will have the Oath pretty soon and I want to apply for US passort too but I don't know how is much better. I would like an advise/suggestion/examples from you how you did it. I've browesed and read on here that it's wisely to make a copy of the Naturalization Certificate before sending passport application!! How is the best to do in your opinion? Did you applied in the same day and same place after Oath (at clerk fron court) or did you go next day there or different day and applied at Post Office? Thank you,

Diana

You can apply for your US passport same day they hand over the Naturilization certificate to you, the officer enters the aproval in the system if you go through the interview and nothing will deny you that except you have a pending criminal case...

Hi King Solomon,

You misunderstand my question! The question was: is better to apply in the same day after Oath or should I wait few days after making a copy of Naturalization Certificate and then go back there or maybe Postal Office?

The real question is, how fast do you need your passport? If you're in no hurry and don't plan on leaving the country within a month of taking the oath, I would be on the safe side and make a (certified?) copy of the naturalization certificate first. Of course a copy doesn't replace the original but it might be helpful to have in case you lose the original. I don't think it makes a difference where you apply for your passport. If you need it really fast, you always can pay "a little" extra and apply for it to be expedited.

I scanned my wife's certificate and printed out a couple of colored copies, knew her oath ceremony was coming up went to that travel.state.gov site, downloaded and typed and printed out her application, they wanted single sheets. Also listed where we could go to file the application, we picked our city clerk because they opened at 8:00 AM where the post office opens at 8:30 AM.

Have to bring the application, USC original certificate, the person applying, two approved passport photos, and money. We opted for the expedient charge, just too many years of waiting. Sealed the certificate in one of those clear stiff plastic folders, got it back in nine days. Ignore the online status, useless.

Where did you get a certified copy made? Only place that use to do that is our register of deeds, but they are too busy now doing nothing. The only good the copy is, is to provide it to the USCIS with two passport type photos, and around 400 bucks if you lose your original certificate. And the only good your original certificate is, is to store it in a safe place, you can use your passport for proof of citizenship.

After my wife's Oath Ceremony we went home a made a copy on the cumputer which could be printed in B/W or color, we then went to the USPS submitted her application, paid for the expedited service, she received her passport in 6 days and the Citizen certificate was returned in 2 weeks no special care was taken in preserving the certificate and it was returned just fine. Now we will go to Social Security and change her status to US citizen and she can register to vote and the process is over until she wants to petition family members to the US.

In my case, I did copy the certificate of naturalization first, then visit SSA/DMV to update my new name and immigration status.

After I did all of this, I did stop by USPS office to send US passport application form.

Updating the record from SSA/DMV will take a minute because they only need to see that in person.

Only the dept of State Passport application center requires to mail the certificate of naturalization.

So I put US passport as last thing.

In total, it takes less than 10 days to complete all of above.

What kind of clear stiff plastic folder? The document protector I found is those soft plastic kind with a white edge on one side with holes punched for putting into a binder.

Also, God forbid if you ever lose your Certificate, will a regular copy of the Certificate(not certified or notarized) work when applying for replacement with the USCIS?
