Engagement Question

We are waiting for our P4 and preparing for interview. Now, I have a question regarding our engagement date.

Before my question, here is my situation:

My Fiancée and I met online in Feb 2008. I went to China to visit her at in May 2008. Before I left China, I unofficially proposed to her. By unofficial I mean, I asked her if she like to marry me, but I have no ring or any anything at the time. She said yes of course. In July 2008, I filed for I-129. In my intent to marry letter I have put down I proposed to her at end of May 2008. I went back to China again during X-mas, and this time I have purchased an engagement ring and officially proposed to her. I officially proposed in a park with just two of us, we didn't have an engagement party or take any pictures during my proposal. I do have pictures of her wearing the ring.

Now, my questions: should I write I proposed in May or Dec 2008 in the renewed intent to marry for the interview? If I write in May, will it cause any problem if VO sees my ring receipt is dated Dec, 2008? And if I write in Dec, will it cause a problem as my first intend of marriage shows I proposed in May?

Or, can I just indicated in my new intend of marriage letter both unofficial and official engagement date? Will this confuse the VO?

Thanks

a ring or a party does not signify engagement but mutual intent does....

I think you are just fine to consider May as when you became engaged. My fiance and I didn't "officially" get engaged until this past New Year's Eve...after we received our NOA2...but we both knew, obviously, a long time before that that we were going to get married. Good luck to you both! :)

I-129F:

Feb. 12, 2008-I met Aldo while vacationing on the Riviera Maya in Mexico

Aug. 29, 2008-K1 application filed by our attorney

Sept. 2, 2008-NOA1

Dec. 16, 2008-NOA2

Mar. 4, 2009-Interview at Juarez Embassy-visa issued

Apr. 13, 2009-POE JFK Airport, NYC (Temporary 90-day work stamp received)

April 18, 2009-Wedding!!!

AOS:

May 26, 2009-Filed for AOS w/ EAD & AP

June 2, 2009-NOA

June 26, 2009-Transferred to CSC

July 10, 2009-Biometrics taken

July 15, 2009-AP Received (approved July 9)

July 20, 2009-EAD Card received (approved July 8)

Aug. 10, 2009-Green Card Received!

No problem. The signed letters of intent signify your intent. Jewelry does not. You do not need to mention "engagement date" at all unless it is some sort of consular requirement, just tell the truth. The letter needs to indicate that you are both able and willing to be married within 90 days of her arrival. That's all. I used exactly the sample letters from this website.

Engagement date is not an official immigration term or issue. You became engaged when she said yes. It's at that point mutual intent to marry first existed.

Like everyone said .. Its not necessary to have an engagement party, or a ring ... we didnt ... You would have both done a an intent to marry letter when you put in your I-129f and you will be required to do another one with your pack 3 ... However you can use the receipt for the ring and engagement pics as evidence ...
