(sorry if this is off topic)

A buddy's wife had skin problems when she came to the US, and now mine does too.

Is this common?

Has anyone found what causes this?

Dr's here have no idea, and the usual diet avoidances and stridex stuff fails.

we have that problem when we first come back from living over seas, an intelligent doctor gave us BENZA CLIN its a prescription for topical use on the skin our skin has developed allergies do to difference in climate, soaps that we use, msg in the food and the list can go on, it works see if she can get a doctor to write a script for it if it dont work u have lost nothing but worked great for us

May have something to do with the colder weather and lack of humidity. Happens every year at this time to people from warmer climates.

Try a humidifyer or hang wet towels around your pad.

That is just fascinating, because Mai's skin looks so much better than it did when she lived in Vietnam. But my belief is that the bad skin came from living in an urban environment with no pollution controls whatever. I have observed this in one other former Hanoi dweller as well. Mai seems to be coping surprisingly well with the dry air of winter in the Midwest. She adores central heat.

I have heard from Vn. women that their skin generally improves with move to U.S. They seem to think that cleaner air and better skin care products made a difference. Who knows. I show my wife the snow on the webcam and she thinks it looks so pretty. I told her the opinion will change when she gets to live with it for 4 months a year. She gets cold in VN. when it gets below 70 degrees, should be interesting.

LOL Dave. That "pretty" snow aint so pretty when your boot is full.

Linh went through bad skin initially and now it's so much better. Some of the bad skin may be due to stress as well as climate, fat content, different products.

That's why we have cable TV. :innocent:

I don't know if this has anything to do with this...

One time, about a week or so after coming back from China, I started itching all over, and started getting rashes everywhere my clothes fit tight, especially around the ankles (socks), and waist. Even behind my ears when I wore my glasses. I took some antihistamines, and it cleared up. Haven't had it before or since.

That sounds like an allergic reaction, if antihistamines cleared the irritation. I might look into an allergy test for her while I still have insurance. But she can't believe the medical system here. I think Thailand's is much easier, more efficient, and better... cheaper too of course.

My husband skin got really dry when he moved here from Philippines, actually he got an allergic rash on his arms after about 2-months being here in which the doctor gave a steriod-type perscription creme. Anyhow unfortunately his skin has gotten really dry, he uses baby oil and now he uses organic castor oil which he seems to like ....make sure to stay hydrated and use moisturizer. Nothing compares with having nice sun and 90 degrees temps to make u sweat and swimming in salt water to condition ur skin, however that doesnt happen here in New York too much , especially in February.

Yes my wife had strange rashes & she swore by a chinese herbal medicine BAR thuoc loi gan mat. But eventually she got bored with these pills. We also looked up teh contents and began to see there was not much magical in them. She still gets rashes some. Then she got acne on her back - which has not gone away. But apart from that the rashes and allergies have died down. Maybe your rashes will go away with time too. We can hope :)

Thanks folks! This looks hopeful, so far;

Benzaclin

Most commonly in the form of a gel, Benzaclin is a drug prescribed to people with acne. Its affective ingredients consist of benzoyl peroxide and an antibiotic called clindamycin.

Benzoyl Peroxide - Benzoyl peroxide works by bringing additional oxygen to pores, which creates a more hostile environment for bacteria to grow in. Further, Benzoyl Peroxide helps rid skin of excess skin cells which keeps pores less cluttered and leads to less breakout in the future.

Clindamycin - Usually used to treat infections with anaerobic bacteria, clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic (drug which binds to bacteria and inhibits early elongation of pepticide chain).

The way Benzaclin works is by combining anti-bacterial action of clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide. Both of these ingredients have been shown to decrease acne abrasions.

Side Effects of Benzaclin and its ingredients -

Benzaclin - Side effects include photosensitivity, dry skin, pruritis (causes reflex to scratch), and dermatitis (inflammation of the skin).

Benzoyl Peroxide - Bleaching of the clothing, dry, itchy skin, redness, flaking and burning of the skin. Side note: With the discontinuation of benzoyl peroxide often comes an increase in skin bacteria (what the benzoyl peroxide initially inhibited).

Clindamycin - Diarrhea. Believe it or not, the use of a product containing clindamycin may cause diarrhea. Although this side-effect occurs with almost all antibiotics, it is classically linked to the use of clindamycin.

Conclusion - As with most all medications, adverse side effects accompany. Unfortunately Benzaclin has a myriad of side effects, most of which are not positive. It is up to the individual patient to decide if the hopeful effects of an acne free face are worth the dry itchy skin, and even running unexpectedly to the bathroom!

My fiancée has taken birth control pills for years, even when she wasn't with any men, to help clear up her skin. She said it took a few switches to find the right one, but now she has no more acne.

May be she is lactose intolerance - it can cause the rash too for some weird reason (I got some weird spots on my arm almost everytime I eat icecream :crying: )

Dry weather, different shampoo - or just that the skin just try to clear itsleves from all the pollution from Thailand

One thing though, I find that I have to change the towel more often here then when I was in Thailand.. sometimes the towel was still damp from my last use, so I feel bacteria grow more easily  It might only be my imagination

But no, I dont have any acne problem here or there.

I and Trang have noticed she is getting some splotches and even itchy in a few places. She said it is from the water here and maybe it is but I think it could be from the soap we use to even the enviroment. I travel a lot in my job and notice sometimes the same things happen to me at times as I go from deep south to deep north to west coast to east coast to the mountains and what not. I got a heat rash on upper body when I went to VN and used Benadryl spray to ease it and Trangs mother saw that it worked and asked for mine and I did and since then when I sent anything I put a bottle in for her to use. It comes in a cream or spray. I expect some adjustment to her body to overcome.
