the brochure regarding EI and living/moving to the US and it seems like that's a totally viable option which would be great!

So, I'm sure that this has all been talked about before but it's hard to weed through the forums so if someone could clear this up for me, that'd be great.

I'm gleaning that once our Visa paperwork is in order and we're on board to interview/get a visa, I can technically quit my job stating the reason as leaving to be with my american husband and I am still able to receive my EI benefits?

Is that right?

Thanks a lot and frankly? That would be really great to be able to start off life having a meager but still yet, viable means. Not to mention, I've paid so much into EI over the years...

Sorry, I don't understand the second post. Are you saying you found the information or just that you're sorry you posted this question?

You won't apply for EI until you're actually in the US. Have you employer write on your ROE that you are leaving to join your husband in the US. Apply as soon as you get to the US. Don't apply too soon! Wait until maybe the week before you are actually physically leaving Canada. Apply as soon as you get to the US, on-line, and mail in your paperwork such as your ROE when you get it, don't wait until you get it to apply.

Yes you can apply:

This information applies only to CR1/IR1 K1 and K3 visa holders - who may be eligible to collect Employment Insurance after they have moved to the U.S.

Applying:

- You can apply using the Online Application

- Ideally your ROE will show your reason for quitting as - relocating to be with spouse/get married/etc - however even if the reason shown is 'quit' you may still be eligible based on the information they will gather from you after you submit your claim.

- Apply as soon as you arrive in the U.S.

I was wondering the same... I mean a week is a really short time to all of a sudden pick up and move, right? But the truth is, if it's the difference between getting and not getting my benefits, I'll do what the want but man... that's gonna be a little tight.

I believe it's 30 days. You can't quit more than 30 days before moving. Be sure to apply ASAP once you arrive in US!

What you need to remember is that you can only apply within 30 days of having quit your job, so if you quit your job too soon, have your interview, then start to pack and move...like 6 weeks later, then apply, you might get denied, if you apply in the 7th week. Yes, it's difficult to get your stuff together but you can do that and work at the same time. I left my job on a Friday, and moved on a Saturday.
