Name Change, How Long It Takes?

Hi everyone,

I made a name change in my N-400 application, passed the interview on 1/7/09 at the Atlanta Field Office and was given the N-652 "Congratulation! Your application has been recommended for approval".

It has been more than a month since that interview and I haven't received the Oath Letter yet.

Anyone with similar situation and experience, please let me know so that I can feel more comfort that my file/case is not having problem (lost, misplaced, delayed, etc...).

What could I do now? should I contact USCIS Atlanta for update (even though the N-652 said I have the right to request a hearing if nothing heard within 120 days...)?

Please advise. Thanks.

A friend of mine had to wait almost 3 months for the letter about the schedule for aoth. I guess if your new name is really different from what you used before, it may take a while but if it's something that you will just drop a second name or about to use your spouse's surname( for married women) then that should not take that long. This is the only thing i know. hope it helps.

Just sit down and relax..The name change usually is done if the initial AOS name does not match with your new name now (on your N400) due to marriage or court order. In this case, you have to right down and check yes for name change which will be in your Nat Certificate later.

Having said this, there's nothing to be worried about unless you have waited more than your timeframe or have moved. The waiting time is jut normal..I also have my name change due to the fact that all my paperworks is still in my old name although I already filed a replacement (I-90) for a new name before. That's the reason why the AO corrected my N400 for that matter ( name change). And I had my interview on the 12th of January and I am still waiting for my Oath letter for like 30 days now.

Relax and have a happy valentine's day!!

Hi all,

I only changed my First name from an Asian name to a easier-to-call American name, Last and Middle names stayed the same, and only changed in N-400 form (not ever before).

After I passed the interview, the IO gave me a form to sign for my name change and then gave me the N-652 Congratulation...I don't know if anone has a name change at the Oath but I heard the Certificate is ready to be handled out at the Ceremonies.

Hope nothing is wrong with my case because I become more anxious as each day goes by without getting the Oath letter.

Thanks.

As per my knowledge at N-400 interviewer will ask you whether you need a name change or not. The name change will happen at oath ceremony. Am I correct?

They make corrections at the interview. If there were some changes, they put in their system, print out and show to you if it's correct and you sign it in front of the AO in which they'll use as reference for your Nat Certificate. That's what I know based on what I went through on my interview.

I did change my first name, too.

There is no difference in processing time in most case.

I was asked and confirmed during the interview for name change, and that was it.

Waiting time is more likely depending on local district office waiting queue and federal court oath ceremony schedule.

You will get new name on the certificate of naturalization.

But certified "the petition for name change" signed by federal court judge may be delivered to you a couple of months later.
