Question Regarding Marriage Cerficate

HI there,

Ok here is another question, it might be very stupid, but here it goes.

me and my wife got married in her home country and we have our marriage certificate in Persian, when she got her CR1 Visa at the time of the interview at the US embassy we were told that's the only certificate we need (translated of course).

So we are married but we don't have a "US Marriage Certificate" the only certificate we have is our "Persian one" which has been translated.

I am a US Citizen Do you think this will cause a problem for us when submitting "copy of the marriage certificate" with our package? Do we need to get a US marriage certificate and get married again?

I am freaking out; if you can help I would appreciate it.

Thanks all

You are fine; the US accepts legal marriages/ marriage certs from other countries. Probably best to keep a hold of the translation though!

As long as your Perusian marriage certificate is authenticated with certified translated English copy, it will be fine.

US recognized foreign marriage document as long as it is equivalent to US legal system.

Even if you try to register your marriage again in US, it will be anulled since you are considered as married from other foreign country per US legal system, which is handled per State law instead of Federal law.

You can check with your local court, but probably they say since you are already married, you should not doing that.

We got married in the USA, ha, our problem was the USCIS wanted three of them and our state law says it's a crime to make copies, but were able to buy originals. USCIS also wanted all of our documents translated by a certified translator, that cost a couple of bucks. If you only have that one marriage certificate, hang on to it, may be difficult to get another from a foreign country.

Depending on state or county laws, in our dumb state even county laws vary, may be such a thing as a conditional marriage, just in case there are questions about your original certificate, if they say your certificate is legal, makes you feel better, if not, can get remarried. You sure learn about laws when you marry an immigrant.

Thanks everyone. I had a copy of the translation (but its the copy) the original copy went along my wife's papers at the embassy. I guess I will need to get it translated again?

the stuff they make you go through, one would think if she has a green card through marriage and we have been together all this long this would count as marriage but I guess they have to make you suffer with the paper trails.

Maybe they think we got that green card out of a Cracker Jack box. Not only the conditional, but the ten year card as well.

I made the same mistake and sent the original certified translation in with our forms. We have the original marriage certificate and a copy of the official translation. I sure hope that works. Will let you guys know tomorrow, b/c we are going at 1:25pm. :)

Had my interview and oath a few days ago. I'd say it depends a lot on the application and the interviewing immigration officer. In my case we got married overseas, and I sent in the copy of our certified translated marriage certificate. Brought the original certified translation to the interview, but the IO didn't even asked for. To be in the safe side I'd suggest you have it translated again.
