We're getting married in like...3 weeks - March 6th..

Should I just wait to apply for it in my married name? Or just suck it up and do it next week?

I'd wait a few years just for kicks and then apply.

Don't listen to me.

I hit reply without looking at your timeline. So much depends on when your I-94 expires. As long as you have more than 15 days left before it expires, you can apply for it after you get married. I got mine as soon as I got down here so that I could get a library card. I went back after I got married, and I had only 13 days before it expired, so I had to wait until after I got my GC.

I got mine as soon as a could after I arrived as well. It just made a lot of things easier all around (Driver's License, medical insurance, military ID, etc.)

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I got married about 2 weeks after arriving...I then applied in my married name once we'd gotten the marriage certificate a week or 2 after (you'll need that if applying in married name since your Canadian documentation has your maiden name of course!

The comment about the I-94 expiring is a good one to keep in mind.

Thanks for everyone's reply...now here's the thing

I Should have looked at the county requirements for the marriage license first  They need me to have an SSN or sign an affidavit saying that I am unable to obtain an SSN (which is not true). So I have 2ish weeks, hopefully this is enough time to apply and recieve a number.

Here is my next questions - I am looking at the application and it says:

Citizenship (check one):

U.S. Citizen

Legal Alien Allowed To Work

Legal Alien Not Allowed To Work (See Instructions On Page 2)

Other (See Instructions On Page 2)

Which should I check? If I check 3 or 4, then I have to provide documentation of why I need the SSN number...but I CAN work eventually. Can anyone who applied on a K-1 let me know how they answered??

Thanks!!

Looking at the application for what? Applying for a SSN? Leave it blank and let them fill it in. I can't remember exactly what I put down when I filled it in, but I think Legal Alien Not Allowed to Work. You don't have to work to get a number as far as I know. Gene had a number when he was a kid, well before time he could work. The other alternative would be to put down "other", and indicate you're here legally, and applying for AOS after marriage.

I wouldn't worry either about the marriage requirement. You can just show them your passport, with the visa in it, and sign the declaration saying you just immigrated to marry and will apply after marriage for a SSN.

I would apply for the SSN ASAP.... It opens a lot of doors for elsewhere. To get your name changed on it after marriage is relatively easy.

Plus, there are people who have had issues getting a SSN with a K-1 after marriage.

Well I spoke to the lady at the County deeds office about the situation and she said I would need the actual SSN card in my hand to apply for the license - which is doubtful as the wedding is in 3 weeks. SHe said I can fill out the affidavit and it won't have any affect on me getting an SSN after the wedding.

I guess I will have to take my chances with filing after we're married - though it's a big city and I'm hoping that they are familiar with the process and I won't have fight with them too much :S

THank you for your advice guys :D
