Collecting Unemployment??

Hi guys,

I've got a question about whether collecting unemployment will affect my ability to become a citizen. I received my unconditional green card about a month ago. As i'm sure you all know these are hard time we live in. I was laid off in November 08. I applied for unemployment pretty much as soon as I received my new card.

It looks horrible that I applied for it so soon I know...but we have bills to pay. My wife and I were both laid off on the same day. We went as long as we could but the job situation in this town is slim to none.

So will this look bad when I apply for citizenship? Or will the fact that I'm still paying taxes out of my unemployment money help?

I appreciate any info you can give me.

Markk

ps. haven't actually received any money from them yet. Apparently there is a bit of back log.....

Collecting un-employment will not affect your citizenship application. The N-400 appliation does not request information about whether you collected unemployment.

You paid for un-employment insurance while employed and are now getting the benefits. There is no shame in that.

I don't thnk it will affect N400 application.

But during the interview, you may have to update your employment record from N400 application form.

If they ask for the reason, you can just say, "I'm in the middle of switching the job!".
