Howdy folks,

I'm just looking for opinions. I've consulted the CDC web site and will consult with my doctor as well and I'm wondering if certain vaccines are really necessary. I'm travelling to China in April and am wondering if Hep A & Hep B are necessary. I'll be primarily in Beijing with a trip further north.

Thanks for any opinions. :star:

I had Hep A done for my trips to China, prepare early it is a 2 shot series over 1 month. Hep B is less of a problem unless you are in a situation where you may be exposed to blood.

Also US citizens need a visa to enter China, I used Oasis Visa services to get the visa, they were inexpensive, and efficient.

Thanks for info. I didn't think Hep B was necessary.

As for the Visa, thankfully the Chinese consulate here is just a couple of blocks from my job, and the application itself seems self-explanatory. It just bugs me that I have to pay $130 and my husband only has to pay $30....GRRRRRRRR.

I've been to China six times, and I've never gotten any vaccinations.

Apparently, US citizens have to pay more for visas to China, thanks to the US's strict visa/immigration laws.

Gee, I thought it was them trying to milk every dollar out of the Olympics that they could, knowing that Americans would just grumble and pay it.

Back to the topic at hand, it sure couldn't hurt to get the Hep vaccinations, even for at home. They're giving them to kids now. I didn't get any of the other stuff recommended by the CDC or DOS or whoever it is. I think they're being way overly cautious.

Enjoy your trip, Sister. I'm jealous.

That may have been part of it, but I think they would have jacked the prices up for everyone else as well.

China seems to have a policy of reciprocity in visa cost with various countries.

A visa from china to US is high, so a visa from US to China is high.

Lucky enough to have business visas, and often renewed at local police stations in country.

Vaccinations? Definitely get Hep A & B, in a 2 shot package called "twinrex". Going south in any part of the summer (apr-sept), consider taking quinolone prophylactically, or at least reading up on plasmodium vivax (malaria). It is alive and well from Henan southward, and has given me some hellish times. Yellow fever in the south in the summertime.

My Doctor is from India . He advised for me to update tetnus, hep a+b. If I was traveling in the deep south something for malaria.Had a friend living in china about 10 years ago. Walked down a side street by a hospital and found someone cleaning used needles and syringes for reuse. Never know if you have to take a trip to the hospital. a+b may give you some peace of mind.
