Your lawyer is wrong. With a tourist or student or many other types of visas where you are required to return home after a certain time, that is true, but with a K-1 fiance visa, you do NOT have to buy a round trip unless you want to. Your Sweetie will be entering the USA already approved to marry you and STAY here, so a one way ticket is perfectly acceptable. If either of you is at all nervous or unsure of going through with the marriage, then a two-way ticket, with the return dated at 90 days after arrival, might be an understandable emergency provision to allow for, but you sound too in love with him to need that.

thanks so much dan! i really apperciate it! i will be buying a one way ticket i found a great deal in spirit airline for 59 dollars one way from medellin to ft. lauderdale. and i am sure he won't be going back to Colombia too lol i won't let him! LOL jk! thanks again! :)

Hi All! i know i have read on here before that it does not matter if you buy a one way ticket or a roundtrip ticket. but i asked my lawyer today if i could buy my fiance a one way ticket because i found a great deal. and she told me no that it has to be roundtrip or else they won't let him leave Colombia??? can someone please tell me if this is true....thanks!

Berta - You have mentioned a few things that have been erroneous that your lawyer has told you. Last November, I bought Leidys a 1 way ticket from Barranquilla to LAX on Copa Airlines and although I could not book her one-way travel through Expedia.com I went directly to Copa Airlines' website to make the purchase. It was not an issue, and Leidys now has her Greencard and we just returned from our vacation in Mexico.

Good luck with everything, and don't forget to factor in a few weeks for your fiance's visa to arrive as you purchase his one-way ticket to Fl.

Oh my gosh, I can't believe your lawyer is asking you to pay her for her "services".

I don't know where she got this information from but it's completely false, not to mention bogus. Anyone who is traveling to the US with an Immigrant visa, in this case a K1, can do so with either a one-way or two-way ticket. That's the whole point of the visa, to establish permanent residency in the US, so why buy a two-way ticket unless it's cheaper for some reason? Augh.

Diana,

I thought about this today, and if you approach it from the point-of-view of a Lawyer, if things did not work out between Berta and her Fiance, she might possibly seek some sort of compensation from the Lawyer if Berta and her Fiance did not work out, and Berta only purchased a one-way ticket. But, I find it strange that Berta was not explained that she had the option of purchasing a one-way ticket.

I'm just super happy for Joe after all those excruciating months of waiting for the Embassy to get its act together.

Congrats Joe!

Just dropping by the thread to see new folks going through the process... very nice.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Does anyone why the embassy website has the i-134 form that expires in 2007?

Here's the one shown in Bogota embassy website: http://bogota.usembassy.gov/root/pdfs/i-134.pdf

This one from USCIS: http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-134.pdf

I filled out the first one without knowing about the newer one. I'm sending my documents out tomorrow, so I still have time to fill out the new one.

Which one did you guys use?
