"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

I read this before I left work today...I know I hated standing for it too, but its part of Canada, to drop it out cuz 2 sets of parents had issues (how they have issues I dont understand) is just stupid.

That is absolutely absurd. THIS IS CANADA. People should have more pride in their country. I went to school in Nova Scotia and everyday, ''O Canada'' played. I find in Western schools, they don't have this ritual. =/

WHERE IS THE LOVE FOR CANADA. :(

This has already happened in American schools. When I was a kid, the class would stand up every morning and recite the Pledge of Allegiance while facing the U.S. flag. That was slowly phased out due to the idea that the pledge was "reducing the rights of those from other cultures." The odd thing about this is that although you were made to stand up, there was no requirement to say the words. You could stand there and daydream if you wanted.

I think the situation concerning both the Pledge of Allegiance and O Canada are moronic. If you don't want to deal with it, then either don't say it (and let others do if they wish) or move.

We have to stand and do the Pledge of Allegiance when I take my stepson to Cub Scouts. I still don't have it memorized- I just fake my way through it. As a Canadian, I don't know if its rude or not to stand there and say nothing.

I think saying nothing is ok

I also think this whole anthem thing is really weird.

I think that's what you should do... what would be rude is if you started singing Oh Canada when the rest are saying the Pledge!!

Which reminds me .. one time in camp we had a Dean that was a USC (this was in Canada).. on Canada Day while we were singing Oh Canada.. he screamed the Spangled Banner over the top of all the voices in the camp... it was the most rudest thing I have ever seen in my life..

:o How rude!

Stacey, I would just stand and say nothing. In fact, I have. LOL

It would be interesting to hear why there is a problem with the singing of the national anthem. Not quite sure where this is coming from. I'm trying to recall my public school days. There was definitely no anthem in high school. I remember we had to recite the Lord's Prayer everyday.... in public school.... before they got rid of that. I have absolutely no recollection of the national anthem, however. But that doesn't mean that it never happened. It just means that those years are far behind me.

Highschool was only 7 years ago for me and I do remember it being played every single day. I actually even sang it over the PA quite a few times. We had several different versions to switch it up...we also sang the half french-half english version all the time.

It was part of my school day...I feel like we have taken so much away from children because of political correctness...no more Merry Christmas..because that is offensive...no more anthem, because maybe a francophone thinks it's rude to sing the anthem in english only.

Whatever it is, though, is it taking away your child's ability to learn? Pretty soon it will be unpatriotic to be patriotic...or is it already?

When I'm watching the World Juniors at Christmas time and there are 25,000 people singing O Canada together as one, I've actually cried. It is a really great feeling to see people banding together, no matter what it is over. There is nothing wrong about being proud to sing your country's anthem, no matter where you come from. These songs are beautiful and they were written by great poets and writers and lyricists and musicians that wanted to symbolize what they felt to be a part of their land.

The whole thing just pisses me off.

In Elem. we always said the Lord's prayer and God save the Queen. I don't remember Oh Canada till Jr. High... that was played every morning over the PA right before the announcements.. In High School .. nada.. just on Remembrance Day etc.
