Jenn, I had the typhoid vaccination prior to my first trip to Egypt. I just had some soreness in my arm from it. I guess it's better safe than sorry.

Also the other Jen, thank God you got that moved!!! Sounds like you had a time but at least you made an accomplishment with it!!

Jen,

First time we went we did do Typhoid meds (but it was pills not a vaccine). We (I went with my dad and sister) took them for like a week, one each day. Now I've never even seen a mosquito in Morocco so not sure how I would have gotten typhoid but it's all good.

I read the risk of malaria is from mosquitos while typhoid is more from water tainted with the feces of infected person. :dead:

Anyway, I guess I'll just get it. Or if I don't, I'll just tell my mom I did. :P

Quick question that doesn't deserve its own thread....

Have any of you gotten typhoid vaccines before traveling to Morocco? My mother is on my case to get one before we leave for Morocco, but I don't really think it's necessary (even though the CDC does technically recommend it).

I know a woman who did indeed get typhoid in Morocco some years ago. If you stick to bottled (and sealed) or boiled water for everything, it's very unlikely you'd get it, but my sister always talks about low risk/high consequences. That said, I got tetanus and hep vaccinations, but not typhoid.

I did get a shock when I jumped into a freezing cold (spring-fed) swimming pool in Meknes and realized there was NO chlorine in the water. There are opportunities to catch things that aren't always obvious.

ETA: After getting ill in Morocco on the first trip, I read that you can start yourself on a preventive regimen of Pepto a week or so before going and keep up a daily dose while there to help protect against some intestinal things. I tried that the second trip and was healthy the whole time, but I also was more careful about what I ate and drank.

I had a series of vaccines before I left for my first trip to north Africa. One you really need and is so important is the typhoid. I did get it every time I left for Egypt. Also make sure you have your tetanus up to date and your flu immunization. I agree 100% with your mom!
