Hello all!

I have recently been informed that my fiance will need active travel insurance with the card in hand and at least a 90 day policy at the time of the k-1 interview. I have been trying to confirm this at various gov sites, but have been unable to verify. The person who told me said this was required for his fiance at the guangzhou embassy. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Thanks for any help!

Doesn't sound right to me. You can query the consulate by e-mail.

I heard this from someone whose chinese fiance has recently came over on a k-1 visa. Also, I WOULD email the embassy directly, but guangzhou requires a valid case number in order to file the email. If I must contact them directly I think I will have to call.

The person who told me this just said this is not a requirement per se, but will help the case for her not being a public charge. Still, insurance is no small fee and as I am operating on a tight budget, I would like to avoid it if possible...I mean I plan on putting her on my insurance when we get married, but don't see justification for paying for the international travel insurance for a couple of months.

How necessary do you guys think this insurance is?

Thanks!

I honestly do not see how insurance will be a guarantee or help her case. What will help is pictures, chats, emails, phone calls and so on. Having travel insurance does not prove to them that it is a bona-fide relationship...does not make sense at all.

I think your friend misinformed you friend. If it were me I would listen to the folks on here who been there done it

This sounds like a scam, from a non-official source. Having worked for the USG overseas, in Embassies, I have never heard of this requirement.

Then forget about travel insurance. This is just misinformation. Unless you have a low income, public charge issues are the least of your worries. GUZ is not a difficult Consulate in this regard and frankly travel insurance would have about a 24 hour impact on finances.

Maybe your friend was confused and meant to say if she was travelling to the embassy over a period of a few days she would be wise to get travel insurance, if she was flying for example.
