well personal experience you can go to ssn office to apply for ss card since SSA office can only issue one identification no for an individual it wont hurt if you go there and ask.

Filed: Citizen (apr) Country: Ireland

If you ticked the box to receive a SSN on your paperwork, you should get it in the mail 2-4 weeks ater arrival in the USA. Your green card will be mailed to you, but it is separate from the SSN and from experiences of posters here, can take anything from a month to 8 months! Not to worry though; when you enter the USA, they will stamp the visa page in your passport and this will serve as a temporary green card for one year.

My hubby is on an IR-1 visa and his POE was on December 4, 2008. He got his Social security card on December 15, 2008. And his welcome letter on December 16, 2008. We're just waiting for his green card within the next couple of weeks. Good luck!

If you apply for your SSN by ticking the appropriate boxes in the form ds-230, you are supposed to receive SSN card within three weeks after the entry. If you do not apply this way, then you go to your local office and apply in person (take your birth certificate).

From my personal experience, I think it is way better to apply locally. Here is why...in my case, it took three weeks for the yellow envelope to get from POE to the USCIS, and I was not in the system at all when I went to check what was going on. I applied for the SSN again, I am in the system now, but they said it would take another four weeks (3+4) to get the card. The more people working on your paperwork, the greater chance of messing up.

I came here in November, I am still waiting for the cards, and I hope something happens after the holidays. :)
