Has anyone ever seen a photo of the head consulate officer (or other C.O.'s) that decide visas for HCM consulate?

Phuong and I ate at Texas BBQ and were looking around but don't know what we are looking for. LOL! Well anyway, GREAT burgers and salad!

OK, I don't know who frequents Texas BBQ, and I can't help you identify COs, but I have to weigh in on Texas BBQ. I hate the place. I went there on the recommendation of a rather famous person on this forum, and I was not all that impressed. Of course, it didn't help that I was in the company of an un-Americanized Vietnamese (my wife) and an Englishman expat. I ordered ribs, which I thought were not too bad, but quite expensive. Mai could not really eat anything there (too rich) and my English friend kept whining the whole time that it was too expensive and meant for tourists (and dammit, we are not tourists!). It is true I think that Mai was the only non-white customer in the place when we went. I just don't care to return there again.

But then, I don't care to return to Saigon ever again. But I will.

I really enjoyed the food and was surprised of all the varied tasty food I ate. I was also never allowed to eat anywhere and anytime we left the area we carried our own food. They seemed to be worried that I would eat something and get sick. I went to one wedding and they even put food from the house in front of me. I had a hard time picking up something once and just stabbed it with the chopsticks and lo and behold the rest of the family did the same. I guess to make me not embarrass. Always had our own bottled water. They were pretty careful with me and wanted to make sure I survived. We did eat ice cream at a famous place in Saigon and I was allowed to partake of that.

I had asked someone once what Vietnamese food was and he told me they eat only fish heads and I was worried but learned that about anything we eat here in the states that they eat also. Maybe the seasonings were different but I loved it. I did have to drink a lot of rice wine that was mixed with herbs that the future father in law added that made it brownish every dinner and it did seem to pack a wallop. The Mother would scream at him to stop filling my glass and he would just laugh at her and pour. Many times I had to take a nap after we ate.

Hey, I am the opposite of your story. While Phuong does like to cook for me at the house, we eat everywhere - on the street, in back alleys, you name it. Been sick from food here two times - BOTH from eating at famous upscale foreigner restaurants! Somehow, the back alley PHO with nats floating in it went down fine. hhaha

I know Jonas. I had no problem with trying to eat out but the family there ( Mother especially) would not allow it. They did make the most tasty food though and very varied from Beef, poultry, pork to seafood. Great flavor everything.

Even was not allowed to wander around by myself for some reason. Always had escorts. I did sneak out twice by myself when I thought no one saw me and after wandering out for a bit I realized that any of their family or friends (And there were hundreds) seemed to be just outside their house or place they stay smoking. I soon realized they called around and gave the warning and they were trying to be like they were there on their own. I tried to say that if anyone robs me that I would just give them what they want and give no problem but they still were over protective of me. I miss them a lot and can't wait to see them all again.

If this sh!t doesn't make you sick I don't know what will.

nuoc-mam.jpg

I can't believe you've got such a thing against fish sauce. How can you call yourself Vietnamese and hate fish sauce?

Seriously, though, Mai and I just had a friend over last night (who also likes fish sauce), and we were discussing the fact that nearly any U.S. sewage plant is probably cleaner than the fish sauce making factory. Food for thought.

More food for thought: Times I got sick eating food in Saigon--2. Times I got sick eating food in Hanoi--0. I guess Southern cooking just doesn't agree with me.

Fish sauce is freaking awesome. It goes great with broken rice, vermicelli and grilled pork, and vietnamese eggrolls... mmm nom nom nom. I went to hanoi this past summer. Just my opinion, I don't really care for their cooking, They like to cook with a lot of MSG, and that stuff makes my tongue numb. To much just makes me sick. Northern food just kind of taste weird to me now a days(and my family is originally 54 bac ky (north folks)). I also got sick from eating at quan an ngon up there, I have no desire to ever return to Hanoi what so ever.
