I did the same thing. Got a lawyer to handle my case. I did not want anything to go wrong and boy was I wrong.

I hired the lawyer on may 30. She had all the paperwork and evidences that she needed with in 1 week. On June 26 she had me sign the I-129f and pay the remainder of the moneys due. every 2 week I call her and she said that it should be any day now that I get my noa 1. after 8 weeks I ask her when she sent off the paper work she told me that it was not sent out until the end of August. Then I had a problem with my bank and the check did not clear. If she sent the paper work off when she said she was going to then the bank problem would of not been an issues. I did not get my noa1 until September 22. I complain about the lack of effort from her office and the lack of compantcey there and she refund me 50% of my money I paid to her.

so be careful about hiring and do your research well.

Here is the problem with Lawyers.

Fresh lawyers whom just passed thier Bar will open up practice.

They charge like $200 $500 per hour and the client think they are getting a good lawyer just because the payed high dollar for him.

Do your research on a lawyer if you need one, Most people don't need a lawyer for the Visa Journey.

A good lawyer is worth his weight in gold.

i did my research and i interviewed a few lawyers. This lawyer had a lot of experience with Colombia so i decided to use her base on that. it was not her fault it was her help in the office. :bonk:

I hope that people learn from this that if they do not have a "special" case they can do it w/out a lawyer easily.

I'm sure someone will come here and beat me over the head over this. (Rebeccajo you watching?)

My lawyer has set me back 3 months minimum. Waste of time and money. My lawyer doesn't even have an actual address. The use mailboxes etc. like the rest of the frauds in this country.

At a minimum, a lawyer is going to cost you time because you have to send them your docs etc. And then they send them to USCIS. If you go CR-1/IR-1, then that is more documentation you have to send them, and then they send to NVC.

If you can fill out a 1040, you can do it yourself.

Done for 3 years or 10 years. Haven't decided yet.

(I'm going for the IR-1 and blowing off the K-3. Even if it takes an extra couple months, it's worth it to not have to deal with USCIS again)

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Note:

Please fill out I-130, wait 6 months for approval, then 3 more months for an interview. (Unless of course we've bombed your country into the stone age, then you qualify for expedited processing.)

Welcome to the USA!!!
