So, getting ready to get all this stuff done and one stumbling block I've come too. After th I 130 is filed, we'll get a package for the I 864 and then for he ov or DS 230, I'm confused if all this stuff has to be sent in. I'm sure the i 864 stuff does for sure but for the DS 230, it lists a whole bunch of originals and such that are also going to be needed for the interview.

Can someone please explain how this process works? I can't quite figure it out. Do they want you to send some of the stuff? Keep it all aside and prepare it for the interview? Will I send it and then they'll have it ready for me when I get to the interview?

Thanks, it's not very clear in the CS1 section at all.

Also... for the interview, is it just me, the person being petitioned for, that has to go? I'm confused because if they ask questions like, what kind of underwear does he wear and things like that, how will they verify that I'm right if he doesn't even have to be at the interview.

Thanks a lot for your h elp, it's appreciated a lot.

This will explain the process once the I130 has been approved. If you are just submitting your application now you will have a lot of time to become familiar with the process!

While you are waiting you can begin to gather all of your documents - original copies of birth certificates (long form), marriage certificates. Also read up on requirements for the medical (especially vaccination requirements) which is required prior to the interview. This site should help: www.panelphysicians.com/

You can start to get together info for the I864 and fill in your DS230 ahead of time as well. All of this will save time later. It is easier to fill in everything when you have time to go through things carefully and you won't be as stressed waiting for documents.

Also start gathering items to support the validity of your relationship - cards, emails, phone bils, photos etc. It is amazing how much time all of this can take but if you start now it might help make the wait a little easier. It always feels better to know you are doing something when so much will be out your control. Be prepared to be very patient - this process will test your patience for sure!

It also helps to fill in your timelines, you will then get an estimate of how long the process may take based on other VJ member's experinces.

As far as the inerview goes the spouse doen't have to be there but it helps for moral support.

Good luck and welocme to the club ;)

I feel very uncomfortable sending my precious original Police Certificates to my spouse in the US (even if I'd be using FEDEX or similar..) and then on to NVC (what if they lose it either at receipt, during processing, or onwards back to the consulate?). I've lived in many countries and it took me a LONG time and money to gather all. I managed to get some in duplicates, but others, I couldn't, and/or I live too far from the embassy to request a certificated copy.. Also, Japanese Police Certificates are difficult to get and they come in SEALED envelops..

Ditto about the military documents. It would take months to get originals if lost, although for these perhaps it is easier to obtain a certified copy just in case...

Is there any way of filing DS-230 directly with the consulate? We got both the I-129 and I-130 approved. Would there be a way of having the consulate request our I-130 documents from NVC and filing the Affidavit and DS-230 directly with the consulate after convincing them to switch the interview to CR1?

Just received NVC case no. today... I have ALL documents, I just need to make copies and send originals to the US.

Standard copies will not help much if they lose them though!

I really don't care if they return the originals, I don't need them after I get my green card, but I want to pray that they get to the consulate all right BEFORE my interview!!! ;-)
