Travel outside US effect wait time for citizenship??

I have a question since my wife said the lady that did here interview at her biometrics appointment said if she travels outside the US it counts against the time time she can apply for citizenship, To me this seems a bit ridicoulous. Her green card is approved and on the way. Say she can apply for citizenship in November 15 2012. But if she goes to Japan to stay with her sister since I am in Iraq and stays for 5 months then she cannot apply until April 2013? I'm not sure I'm buying what the local office here in Guam is saying about that.

Does anyone have a link to the instruction about this or are they just plain nuts.

Thanks

A prolonged absence from the U.S. will break the continuity of the alien's residence in the U.S. for naturalization purposes, although it may not affect the alien's ability to return to the U.S. as a permanent resident. An absence from the U.S. of less than six months does not break the alien's continuity of residence in the U.S. for naturalization purposes. However, an alien's absence from the U.S. of six months or more breaks an alien's continuity of residence.

Probably it's time to check M-476 to understand the requirement and whole process for naturalization.

Try to research Article 319b of Immigration Nationality Act, maybe your wife can be qualified on this provision since you are deployed overseas. This will expedite the process of her citizenship.
