My visa arrived via Canada Post about 15 minutes ago, yay! BUT THE PACKAGE THAT READS: "DO NOT OPEN" has suffered a fall or something on its journey to my doorstep. It has a small (3") gash along the bottom. I don't plan on entering the US for another 2 weeks 5 days. but this has broken my heart! I can only imagine what the customs agent will say to me: did you open this? WHACK, he throws the book at my right temple.

I've emailed the US Consulate and am goign to call them. Do you think this is a big worry. If I can't call them, I don't thikn I can wait until they reply... nooooooooooooooooooooo!

Hopefully they answer, and save the email! If you could, take a pic and include it in the email. As well I would contact the POE you were going to enter and hear what they have to say, as it is up to them. But take a deep breathe, time is on your side!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I am sure you'll be okay. Like flames said, save the email, in the very least, even if you don't get a reply it shows that you immediately took action to correct a perceived wrong. Save the letter packaging as well - with the date it was shipped and print off a copy of the tracking # showing when it arrived at your destination. You can point out that your email was sent the same day you received it.

That sure sucks! But hey - you got your visa and only a few small steps away from being a PR. =)

Yikes! Try not to sweat it. You do still have some time and you do have the visa.

Breathe!

Let us know what happens with the consulate though.

Yes, that sure sucks alright! The last this you needed...but I think you took the correct action and you got some good advice (above), I don't expect that you will have any problems and I will cross my fingers for you that it will all get sorted out.

This whole process is such an awful stress...when I think about what we've been thru this year

all these fastidious little hoops we've been made to jump thru...

I remember sitting blot upright in bed in the middle of the night worrying that we did the embassy papers incorrectly and the only thing that made it possible for me to get back to sleep was the fact that I photocopied the entire packet just before I posted it and when I referred to it it was fine.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the quick responses! I was quite shaken this afternoon.

Because of previous problems with my visa process (a lost package (Canada post hates me)) I had a direct number to the K-visa officer at the vancouver consulate (Olivia). She stated that as long as I can't read the papers in the package, everything shoudl be fine. However, because Vancouver airport is my POE in a couple weeks, she recommended that I come in early to exchange the envelope for a new one. I only have one concern: the consulate's security is #######, I wondering how I get in a 1/8 opened package into the consulate with them not insisting I walk outside and open it (I saw one guy flipping out because he had to do it). Oh well. Hopefully they think of that!

Again, VJ s great, and it is great becuase of its members. Thanks a lot and havea great day!
