know, just stating some facts about my wife because I'm married to a Filipina. It is funny though. And i forgot to include that she eats dried fish and rice ( i call it bait fish with her hands, dip it with vinegar with garlic. I just love watching the satisfaction on her face.

which is why it's considered comfort food for us Filipinos...it brings back memories when you were little and to a place where eating it was not considered weird...and you MUST it using your hands!

* All her relatives think your name is "Joe" -

...most of my Filipino guy friends are named Joe (or a variation of Joe)

* All your kids have 4-5 middle names

somewhat true...i originally had 3 middle names...now i'm only using 1. for Filipinos, it is customary to carry your Mother's maiden name as a middle name. add to that, they usually put Maria as one of the "First" names...and then your "Real First Name" plus a second one...just because. lol. my husband's friend's son is named Z (that's his real First Name, not an initial) and the couple is Filipino.

Fate is building a bridge of chance for the one you love...

You may be married to a Filipina If... (written by an American guy who loves his Filipina wife in spite of the numerous irregularities):

Well, these are not set in stone..nor are they absolute for everyone...don't take it very seriuosly.

I would love to see a list like this, but from a Filipinas prosepective about her American man. Any takers???

I know, just stating some facts about my wife because I'm married to a Filipina. It is funny though. And i forgot to include that she eats dried fish and rice ( i call it bait fish :) with her hands, dip it with vinegar with garlic. I just love watching the satisfaction on her face.

I am extremely proud to 1)have fallen in love with my wife 2)that she is uniquely Filipina.

I have maade 3 trips to the Philippines; spending no less than 3 weeks each time and find it to be an amazing culture. For Americans it is a community like none we have experienced in the States. And I certainly appreciate all the experiences I had when there and the INCREDIBLE hospitality that is offered when there.

I would do nothing to offend both of the Filipinas in my life...My gorgeous wife and our darling, intelligent, beautiful daughter. I am in love with the both of them and I miss them incredibly. I have tried to busy myself with working as much over time that I can as well as preparing their home for them. Our baby girl asked for a "princess bed"..(she wanted a canopy bed with curtains to close as she sleeps)...so, i built one for her. But its not enough to shorten the time, shorten the distance. SIGH....i miss them so much.

We are fortunate that our CR1 has processed very quickly, but i don't think it can ever be processed quickly enough for anyone of us. It is very likely that VISAs will be issued by early to mid december, but we are allowing our baby girl to finish her school year there. So, we add another 3 months to the wait....for her.

Anyhow, I am rambling.

Hang in there and before you know it, your family will be with you soon. I know how hard it is to wait, how to kill the time and just content yourself with their voice and image on the cam but one thing for sure, it is worth all the wait. As my signature states, I am lucky to be married to a Filipina and how true. It is a journey worth taking.

Goodluck and we both wish you and your family the best of everything. Be ready with the BAIT FISH, lol.

I must admit I still don't it eat and not really a fan of the smell. She "hides" her bait fish in one of the drawers in our laundry room and cook it in the garage when she feels like eating. One thing I notice though, my wife is just so fun of salty foods. Bait fish, soysauce, salty snacks, alamang. She used to include MSG in her cooking but I found out about it. We talked and agreed not to use that in our foods because it reaises my blood pressure. When we eat rice, she always has alamang on the side. She said its an appetizer. So far , her BP is okay but I am worried she is eating too much salty foods.

it's tough to get use to the smell. you probably will never get use to it. you have to kinda have it "ingrained" into your DNA somehow to find it good to eat. comfort foods are usually not that good to anyone else who don't think they are "comfort" foods. recently, my husband had to eat mashed potatoes for a week ( 4 wisdom teeth removed at one time)...he said he can't even swallow it anymore. he can't stand eating potatoes everyday.

i use to like it when MSG is added to food. it's very common in the Philippines. it really is good in salvaging dishes 'coz it can literally make any dish delicious....but i realize now that everything that has MSG in it tend to taste exactly the same...MSG! it has a distinct taste and i can really tell when it is present in food.

i don't know why salty foods but it's a nice balance to the white rice. you have to it all those stuff with rice...it's the only way.

Grace, my wife, is crazy over sausage. Apparently, that is hard to find in The Philippines. So, on my last trip there..I had bought about 20 pounds of various types of sausage..frozen them, froze some Igloo freezing packs...placed it all inside an Igloo cooler and stashed it in my suitcase. It made it there still frozen..and this was with an additional 27 hour lay over in Beijing.

What I am somewhat worried about is our 5 year old adjusting. Yes, I know that children are resilent..but I am worried about her having to deal with a major change in diet...and a bit of a culture shock as well.

My wife introduced me to a kind if sausage in the Philippines called LANGGONISA which we eat for breakfast with sunny side up eggs. We found packs in the FIlipino store here and she thought I might like it. I LOVE IT!! It is sweet and just great when mixed with rice and eggs. She is not really a fan of our American sausage, she said the taste is different.

She also cooked SINIGANG and at first it was a funny taste for me because it was sour but the second time she did, I kinda like it. Im looking forward to her new Filipino dishes but nothing beats LUMPIA!

Brat,

thanks for the reply. i felt every word you said. Indeed, Filipinos are unique unto themselves and you have to make no effort in convincing me of their fine qualities. I married a Pinay, so I agree completely.

Interesting, my wife has said on several occassions "You are Filipino now". After I took a Filipino trait and used it myself(like pointing with my lips)..LOL. But to bestow that too me makes me very proud.

And like I said before our baby girl is Pinay...so, being certain that she grows with a pride in her heritage and culture is extremely important to us...in fact, its a mandate. When Grace and I have a child this Fil-Am child will also know its roots, respect its roots, and be proud to be Fil-Am. Because our home will have an atmosphere of respect for both cultures.

Hey Rob,

I honestly didn't care much for the sausage when I was in the states. It always comes up as a teasing session between me and my SO. I hate the sausage - but I Loooove the biscuits especially the ones with gravy and grits on the side. :D You should try the Longganisa that jom has mentioned. It's a bestseller here in the Philippines.

Awww... I think I might have a problem with the adjustment with food there. I am a huge fan of Filipino food- dried fish, longganisa and toyo! I had to settle with KFC and bread every time I go there. In fact, i have decided, I could live on bread alone when I go there. :(

Hi Happy Dancer - You reckon that I believe you either? You and Jom's wife not liking American sausage? Try to think what I'm thinkin' and you'll know what I mean!

Do go on! I don't believe it, she's just kiddin', ain't it?

The South shall rise again!
