I found some of the meat pies contained meet of unknown heritage. They call it bush meat which is anything they choose to throw in including a species of giant rat raised like we do rabbits. I remember when we were at market that the cuts of beef where heaped into a wheel barrow and sold by this man pushing it around. There was a lot of rice and noodles. There is also lots of broths that were usually spicier than I liked but his family would make some milder for me. I ate a lot of bananas and oranges. You don't find a lot of dairy products either. The homes I stayed at didn't have ovens either so if you are cooking you may only have a cook top.

Yep, hence my motto, no meat or very little in Africa. If you do, check for parasites when you go back home.

My SO eats roasted rat on a stick. ;)

No, I thought you will be in Dakar for a few days so I meant do it while there. I can't remember what kind of cheeses, maybe Taurean remembers.

Just be adventurous and try whatever cheese they got

Actually not even going to stay in Dakar at all, will be going directly to Thies and staying there for 4 days. Then to Gorre inland and then to Tamba. In Thies & Gorre we are staying in hotels so not sure what type of cooking I'll be doing. In Tamba we will be staying in an apartment so will have more opportunity to cook.

My SO eats roasted rat on a stick. ;)

So THAT'S what became of the toilet rat after S beat it over the head with the plunger.

Most of my travels are around Lagos and Enugu areas. I try to eat native as much as I can, where is the adventure in eating american in another country ? I did ok actually, avoiding lettuce was hard because at home I love my salads but lettuce just traps water which isn't pure enough there. I don't mind the different meats. They did laugh at my reaction in the market to the fried whole giant rats. One of the tricks of surviving eating in strange places is not to get too curious about the exact content of the dishes.

 I co-sign this. I didn't bring anything with me except clothes. I didn't think I would like any of the food, but I ended up loving almost 90% of it. They do use a lot of "cow" meat, chicken, and fish in Liberia. I hate fish, so I would always just pick around it and let my husband eat it. If I'm not mistaken, I think Senegalese food is a little different from normal West African food because it has more of a North African flair to it.
