Trailmix, I don't think anyone gets a day off on any holidays here. Every time there's a long weekend my husband says something about checking out the sales. I'm like "But won't all the stores be closed?" Nope. Apparently, long weekends are for shopping.

The small ones are real turnips. The larger ones are known as rutabagas here. They're known as that in Canada, also..... it's just that they make them interchangeable there.

Hubby wants to have a special dinner for Canadian Thanksgiving, but I have to work tomorrow night, so we'll probably go out somewhere. He said his mom always makes perogies for Thanksgiving, so I was bemoaning the lack of ethnic restaurants in Lexington. The best we could do is Indian, which isn't quite slavic, and tends to be quite expensive...But could be a fun change

to me, turnips have yellowy flesh and have a strong taste, and rutabagas have white flesh and a much milder flavour

omg today we went ALL over the place looking for a turkey breast. Wegmans didn't have it, shoprite didn't have it, finally went to Whole foods and found a free range breast but it was like 17.00! We could have just bought a whole turkey for that price. But after driving all over for most of the morning we decided to just get the free range turkey breast.

Ugh. Worked at Blockbuster Video when I was in college. Open 365 days a year. I ALWAYS had to work Christmas and New Year's. Sucked.

My grandfather used to raise about 20 or so turkeys every year for Christmas dinner. He would let them out of their pen for a daily run around. The day they saw my mom hanging out sheets on the clothesline is a day of infamy in our family. free range, indeed!

Sprailenes: we had to settle for turkey breast loins (which are yummy, but kinda expensive). We then spent 40 minutes in the express line at Walmart to pay for it, sweet potatoes, and canned whole cranberries. If it wasn't for the fact that I really wanted to make some semblance of Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend, I would have just dropped everything and left.
