Most of the COs speak the local language as well as English, so they can conduct the interview in either language.

No, having a bank account has nothing to do with getting your visa approved.

The existing reviews of the Guayaquil consulate don't tell the entire story AT ALL. If my fiancee is allowed to enter the U.S. on Oct. 9, I shall, soon afterwards, post a review that will make your computer explode.

1. The first thing is for YOU, the USC, to BE THERE at the so-called "interview" even if you must spend your life's savings on the airline ticket. You MUST BE THERE even if you are on your deathbed or are already dead. This is not open for debate.

2. You MUST accompany your fiance to the interview window. If the locals object, tell them that you are exercising your right as a USC on U.S. soil to ensure that no illegal questions are asked (they WILL BE, at Guayaquil) and to ensure that all evidence BROUGHT is LOOKED AT. If the locals still try to prevent you from this, state firmly and loudly "I am a U.S. citizen. You are not, and therefore you cannot POSSIBLY comprehend the gravity of the situation." Then, loudly insist on talking with an American (and expect to be told that "they're all in meetings"). Don't accept that, and be quite prepared to shout "FIND ONE NOW!" upon further resistance.

3. When the FSN (foreign-service national) collects your papers, tell him/her UP FRONT that you are handing him/her the preliminary paperwork only, that you expect the interview to be conducted by an AMERICAN, and for a decision on the visa to be made TODAY. When excuses are made (and they will be), state "I am a U.S. citizen, and you are on my time. Quit wasting it. Find an American."

4. If you are "lucky" enough to be interviewed by an American, it may be the Vice-Consul, a tall, crew-cut, silver-haired man with dull blue eyes whom the rest of us call "Mr. Silver." In the opinion of three couples, he is an IDIOT. Do NOT allow him to "mail it in" -- insist on his full attention, his specific acknowledgment that he is looking at every piece of evidence that you are presenting, and his specific understanding of every answer that you tell him. He has admitted that his Spanish-speaking skills are weak. Tell him up front that you expect a decision on the visa to be made TODAY, in your presence, and that if anything else occurs, you will immediately confer with Chief Linderman (the Section Chief -- more on him when I post my review). You might instead be interviewed by Deputy Chief Susan Tuller (I think that's her name), and I don't know anything about her except that her staff can't find their butt-cheeks with either hand.

5. Questions about your sex life have NO PLACE in a K-1 interview. They are borderline harassment, and illegal in government and in the private sector. Point this out while glaring at the interviewer, and then ask "What are some LEGAL questions that you wish to ask?"

6. If you are there with your fiance, and if the Consul or (worse) the FSN tries to separate you to ask you questions individually to see if your answers jibe (the "Stokes interrogation"), sternly reply that neither of you is a criminal, and you are a committed couple, and answers given by one of you can be considered to be coming from both.

7. Re-read every item above and do not deviate from one iota of this advice. Do not accept being denied admission to the consular premises -- you are a U.S. citizen on U.S. soil, and you have every right to be there -- in fact, more right than the FSNs or native Security people do.

I'm ready to go postal again just remembering the utter MONKEYSHINES that this hellhole consulate pulled on me and on two other couples, and I'll be damned if I don't extend every bit of my knowledge to help keep the same from happening to others.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
