This has been something hubby's can do in Canada for quite some time now. I don't recall ever reading or hearing of any problems with SIN.

I, personally, think it's up to each couple as to what name they take after marriage. His, hers, ours.....being together is the main thing.

Wow, how antiquated is right. I worked with someone that took his wife's name over 25 years ago. No biggie. In fact, I know of people married or not, that have taken different names over the years (not the same person!), and while they had to provide "reasons" for wanting their name changed, it was not a huge issue.

I had read about this (option) years ago, and had even talked to people about it. Most react quite shocked about this possibility/reality.

Although I had claimed for over a decade that I would not re-marry, I did because of this border thing, and so...

when my partner and I talked about names, and would I change mine, I simply asked him if he would change his.

Of course he had never even heard of this let alone thought he could ever do such a thing.

Bahaha....shocked him into being okay with whatever.

I obviously kept my name....not because I like it that much, it is simply a familiar identity.

Names (and labels) are over-rated! Hee, hee.

We had a guy in the military that took his wife's name! he got bugged for it big time, didn't help much that he was sort of a looser,lol

That doesn't surprise me. Most places in the U.S., despite some claiming to be "progressive" or "liberal," become quite confused if and when a husband takes his wife's surname. Tradition, for the most part, seems to be a somewhat stronger element in the U.S. than it is in Canada or at least, it is from what I've seen. If a woman wanted to take a man's last name, no one would bat an eye, but if a man takes her's, the legal and social ramifications could get quite ugly.

As a side-note, if a woman decides to hyphenate her maiden name with her husband's surname, she may run into difficulties with various organizations. Many credit card companies, for instance, have problems fitting a hyphenated name onto their cards and some will flat-out refuse to do so; if they do it, be prepared for them to remove the hyphen or drop one of the two names at a moment's notice.

Even worse, very few airlines have made any provisions for hyphenated surnames. Most of their computers literally can't process it and to update the software, hardware or both, would require more money than the airlines are willing to spend on a minority of individuals. Many women have had to deal with terrible ordeals at airports (i.e. security issues, boarding pass problems, not allowed on flights due to name mismatch, etc) due to airline computer systems being unable to handle their hyphenated names in some manner or another. What usually happens is that women with hyphenated names bring along their marriage license as proof, in the event they get held up by some illogical and overzealous employee.

I actually suggested to a friend that her husband take her name a few years ago. I posted this article because I was happy it was getting news coverage, maybe this will make the US at large more familiar with the concept.

Oh, wow. I meant to post this in the Off-Topic thread. Oooops; my bad.

But to make this relevant to the topic... I love my new last name. It's so French and sexy, and it doesn't rhyme with a bunch of dirty words like my maiden name does.
