Hey everyone

i wondered if anyone can advise me.....im sure this is the wrong place to post this, but without the knowledge of knowing where..here it is....

so, at present i do not have a driving license, i plan to take my test soon, and want to fairly quickly as many of you know its so hard when you cant drive in the US.

My question is.....although i can drive a manual, im thinking of taking my test in an automatic, and knowing that here in the UK, an automatic does not get you a full license, i was wondering whether it would make transferring my license to a US one more difficult?

any ideas?

many thanks.x

I doubt either would cause an issue here in the US since we don't have manual/automatic designations for DL. (In many states you'll have to take either the written test, driving test or both to get a license anyway - having an out-of-country license just gets you past having to take a driving school).

Most states will just make you do a written test, and do a driving test to get license.

In NY, they allow the use of foreign license up to time of getting green-card, at that time you will need to apply for a NY DL and do written and road test. Only country the NY allows direct exchange of foreign DL for NY DL is Canada.

DL is a privileged granted by state, so issuing rules vary.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

Don't worry about your test. You can guarantee you'll be able to drive better than most kids that have a license over here. In my test they didn't even ask me to get in reverse gear. :help::o

Met the ole man in January 1998

Jan. 2004: K1 visa issued ~ April 2004: Got on a plane ~ Nov. 2004: GC in my mucky hands ~ Dec. 2006: Received 10 YR GC

In Washington State you take the written test which comprises 25 questions (read the book) there are questions different to England!!! Do not think cause you have been driving a long time that you can pass here with ease. Also you have to take the actual test. I agree with Jason&Sarah on this one if you have not taken your test in England then leave it do not waste your money, the rules are different here and you will only confuse yourself.

I did my test last week in Maryland and WOW I was surprised at how simple it was - it was a controlled course, just learners taking there test with a reverse in a box - stop at stop sign - reverse straight - parallel park and cross a road and park. think it took me about 10 minutes. I took mine in an automatic that i was renting which made it even easier. I have now bought a manual car and keep trying to change gears with the wrong hand (lol) good job i dont have window winders as would prolly end up opening and closing the windows instead of changing gears.

but seriously, if you can learn to drive a manual car then thats a lot better as you will then be able to drive any car anywhere, automatics drive themselves all you do is brake and steer which takes all the fun out of driving :P

Look up the website for the dmv in the state you will be living and you should be able to find out the system for new drivers and out of country drivers.

check out my time line and dont forget to update yours too :D
