Half of my university degree is in linguistics. The raising of the voice at the end of the sentence is actually a derivative from the French language. It's actually a very annoying pattern of speech which makes you think you are asking a question when in fact you are making a statement.

OMG, I know who does that ALL THE TIME.... Kylie Kwong.... the Australian-born Chinese chef. I had to stop watching her cooking shows because I nearly went mad from listening to her. Come to think of it, a lot of Australians talk that way.

Yes they do. It is also prominent there.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Yes they do, Aussies and kiwis - but it doesn't bother me too much. (and although my Husband is Australian, he doesn't do it)

What bugs me is when people just can't seem to use the word "me". I see them on the news all the time, after some disaster or something. "Like, there you are, sitting on your couch and then you're flying through the air into your neighbour's kitchen" when they really want to say "I was sitting on my couch when the tornado hit and it picked me up and flung me next door into my neighbour's kitchen"

####### is that? What's wrong with the word me!? sheesh! I wasn't there! I was sitting safely 10 states and 1000 miles away!

Actually the one step about finishing off a senctance with "the eh?", I have always noticed a lot of Canadians always end their sentances raising their voice like it is a question and not a statement even without the eh? thing. That always was curious when I hear it and even when I lived there it would always stand out.

Really so that's where it comes from. When I lived in Canada I just never really noticed it that much, but now I hear it all the time. So either I just tuned it out when I was growing up or it's just gotten really pronounced over the past few years. It's just kind of confusing as I'm not quite sure how to respond to them since their statement sounds like a question and they just told me the answer...

Yeah it seems to be a bit of a phenomenon that has happened over time.

Reba- I never got that either!!! How weird is that.

Come to think of it, I don't recall it occuring growing up in Australia either. Guess if you're around something long enough you don't hear it, but when you're away from it for a long time, then it really comes out strong...

That actually may be the case. I didn't realize how strong my accent was until I was away for a year and then went back to Canada at christmas time last year and ended up talking to my local postman. I literally was like, THAT is what I sound like???!! It was nuts!

For the past 3 years or so, their website has stated that they have no intent to move into states they are not already in. Which means, they don't intend to encroach on KK territory.

Krispy Kreme? Do they even exist anymore? I haven't seen any of those in about 2 years.

Think there are a few KK around. i was never a fan.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

It's annoying to who? You? I say "eh", and I have a lilt in my voice at the end of the sentence. People point it out to me, that's what I do...that's the way I speak. Oh well. *shrug*

Yes, they're still around I assure you. They closed a few stores, mostly in Canada I think, because they bit off more than they could chew and fudged their books at bit, but yes, they're still around. Especially in North Carolina where they originated.

Tim Hortons wasn't actually started by Tim Horton. It was the Joyce family out of Nova Scotia. I remember Mr. Joyce being absolutely horrified when Wendy's decided to stop having the donuts made fresh at each store. They're now flash frozen and shipped out to the franchises.

*sigh* I miss Tim Horton's coffe. I visited Toronto this weekend and insisted on buying one before I even left the airport.

Oh, and if you're wondering why this silly Bermudian is posting in the Canadian forum, I'm Canadian/Bermudian. I only moved back here two years ago to help with some family issues.
