So this morning I almost hit another car when I heard on the radio that the Bush administration FINALLY admitted that Georgia fired first:

"The Georgian government launched a major military operation into Tskhinvali [the capital of South Ossetia] and other areas of that separatist region," [Rice] said.

But in typical Bush administration double-speak, she added later:

"I refer... to Russia's intimidation of its sovereign neighbours, its use of oil and gas as a political weapon... its threat to target peaceful neighbours with nuclear weapons... and its persecution - or worse - of Russian journalists and dissidents," she added.

Yeah...shame on Russia for intimidating sovereign countries, its use of energy as political weapons, military threats and erosion of a free press. The United States would never do such a thing. I'm surprised she didn't criticize them for detaining prisoners indefinitely.

In a related note, I heard Russia's stock market crashed, was closed for a day and a half, and they had to close it again (today?) when it went up too fast. Russia's clearly in a lot of trouble on multiple fronts, and it's also clear that Democracy in Russia is unravelling. It's too bad we don't have the leadership or moral authority to foster positive change.

Yeah, we really do have a global economy now. The drops in the stock market in America were affecting foreign exchanges too. I guess Russia is not immune to global economics either. I wonder what Putin is going to do now? It should be interesting to watch everyone try to fix what they screwed up in the first place.
