Theoretically, what would happen with jury duty?

If I were to be called up in the UK for jury duty, what would happen?

I'm in the US now, have been since May and we're awaiting AOS.

How would they know I'm not in the UK to be able to do it? What would I need to do to notify them? This hasn't actually happened (and I hope it never will), but theoretically, what's the procedure?

Here, we have city and county jury duty. If you get called to one and now live in the other, all you do is fill out the paper to say you have moved. They permanently remove your name from that computer generated list.

I'd imagine it is about the same.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

Ho would you know you had been called?

If you have notified the Inland revenue on form P85 that you are no longer in the UK then you will not get called for Jury duty.

Ahh. See, I wondered if there was some kind of official 'I've left the UK, quit sending me things' form.

I also got a National Insurance contribution notice at my old home the other day (my parents still live there, that's how I'd know about this kind of stuff) and whilst it's something I no longer have to worry about, I'd still rather not get letters about that kind of thing.

I'll send off that form in the next few days. Thanks for telling me!

Your welcome. If you have paid tax in the UK this tax year you may get a nice tax rebate as you are no longer resident in the UK. We got almost 6 months tax back when we filed the P85.

Unfortunately, I haven't worked in the UK for a while, so I probably won't see anything back. Not really worried about that though; just want to keep all the right people updated with the right paperwork, you know?

And I had thought that jury duty was done through the electoral roll, but perhaps that's as common a misconception as it is the US (the idea that only if you're registered to vote will you get called for duty; not true). Or maybe that used to be the case, but now so few people vote that it's done through people who've ever paid tax rather than people who've ever voted. :P

I thought that jurors were contacted based on the electoral register?

Me too

Jurors are selected entirely at random from the electoral register. I suppose if you don't want to be selected you don't re-register, which occurs every year when you fill out that form to say who can vote in your household. Only downside is you lose your right to vote.

Once you file form P85 the inland revenue will notify the electrol registar that you are not resident in the UK, if you wish to continue to vote you will need to register with your foreign address and either appoint a proxy vote or select a postal vote, you can not vote in all elections only those open to UK citizens residing abroad.

For Dury duty they will not select anyone who has a foreign address, only those resident in the area that covers were they live.
