I received my SSN card in the mail Tuesday, just one week after I went to the SSN office to apply...that didnt take long at all!!! Now the fun of adding the SSN card to all the U.S. credit cards that I opened with my Canadian SIN #.

I also received my Washington drivers license in the mail yesterday...I think that is the last of the things I was waiting for with the whole immigration/moving process.

All done now for two years!

2 yrs--MINUS 90 days,lol congrats!!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Hi LindaB,

Congratulations on getting your "oh-so-important here in the USA" SSN card so quickly. Wow, that was quick that you got it in a week (lol...I had to wait 8 weeks for mine, as there was a delay in verifying my immigration status).

Congraulations too, that you got your driver's license transferred over from you Canadian license. One less thing to worry about, in terms of having to take another driving test (lol...likewise, I got mine transferred too, which was the easy part of this process).

Yes, don't forget to file the I-751 Removal of Conditions 2 years minus 90 days later for your conditional green card.

In the meantime, enjoy your "two year break". Welcome to America, LindaB!

Thanks Ant! I actually wasn't able to just transfer my Canadian drivers license, I had to do a written knowledge test and the driving test.....both very stressful.....not fun after 28 years of driving! Glad that is over with!

Hi LindaB,

Glad you got that over with too, even though you had to do the written and knowledge test all over again. Too bad that you couldn't get it transferred though (I got mine in 1-2 weeks after I applied and had it transferred, which was a lot faster than getting an SSN that took 8 weeks... ). How long did it take you to get the tests done and then eventually get your new license? I'm sure it was easy for you though, since you've had many many years of experience of driving in Canada! And I'm sure it feels good for you too, now that you can drive in the USA!

Congratulations Linda! Doesn't it feel great to take a little breather from worrying about immigration paperwork? I told myself that I was going to be really organized and start putting together evidence for the I-751 removal of conditions, but I just can't face it. I'll probably be scrambling to get everything together when my time to file comes! It must feel great to overcome these last few hurdles (the SSN card, license, etc.).
