"Corrected" Green card received

So USCIS sent my wife a new card after six months of waiting for her I-90 to be processed. The new card has the same incorrect category code as the old one. The only things different are the issue date and expiration date. So, they gave her another six months validity for free, but didn't fix the error.

I don't understand why they would issue a replacement card if they don't think there was an error on the old card. Shouldn't they have just rejected the I-90?

On second thought, if USCIS reviewed the I-90 and didn't change the category, then they must think it is correct. After all, there isn't much difference between an IR6 and an IF1.

When we filed the I-90, my wife couldn't return the card because she had lost her wallet. A couple weeks later, she recovered her wallet with the green card inside.

This makes me really scratch my head and wonder why they went ahead and issued the new card without charging a fee if they didn't think there was anything wrong with her original card and we hadn't sent the card in to begin with. Shouldn't they have told us to re-file an I-90 for a lost card instead?

Not that I'm complaining. My wife was really worried about carrying her card with her all the time, but now that she has a spare, she can breathe easier about it.

Yeah. I don't know. The whole thing just seems really strange to me. I wish they would have sent some kind of explanation with the card to let us know why they did what they did.
