Requesting employment letter

I just recently got a full time job that meets the poverty requirements. Thank goodness! Well, I want to ask my Human Resource person for an employment letter but I've only been working there for a week. I need to get the letter soon. My husband's interveiw is next month. I don't feel comfortable blabbing my whole life story to the HR lady about why I need employment verification. Regardless of how long I've been working at a place, I'm not the kind of person that discusses my personal life at work. How have most people on VJ handled this situation? I realize some people are very close with their boss so it was quite easy but what about others? Does anyone have suggestions for me? Keep in mind, I have to go through HR to make this request. I would appreciate any advice you have. Thanks.

Give them a copy of the instructions from the Embassy besides everything they do is confidential and you have to have the letter.

I'm not so sure about the part "they don't need to know why, it's not their business".

Yes, it is their business. Employees can be lying to the employers to obtain "Employment Status" letter to apply for loans, cars, mortgage etc. or any reason which may bring legal and financial problem to the employers. This is why most company will and must ask why you want them to attest for your current financial status. For most sizeable companies, you will need to explain to HR Dept why you need them to write up this letter and for whom this may concern etc. Just standard procedure.

For OP's concern, it is true one does not want to blahbing one's life story to others. This is NOT a blahbing matter, you WANT something from HR Dept, and they never asked to cause you this kind of trouble. So, my advise to you which I did myself, bring the Embassy's letter/check-list, explain in brief why you need this, what you want the letter of employment to state, sign and seal by HR Dept Letterhead paper.

1. Embassy's checklist where shows a request of Letter of Employment from USC

2. Letter of employment contains: Start date of current employment, Current employment status (yes, you are still working for us and in good standing, as of date...), the employee's hourly wage is $5.00 or annual salary is $20,000 etc. you get the point.

3. Make sure they print the letter on company's logo stationary and envelope with company's name and logo. This is an official document.

Good luck

I don't know about that. As long as the employer is telling the truth about you then how can they be putting themselves in any jepordy? I work for a large company (5000+ employees nationwide) and I just asked them for a verification. They asked me what info was needed and how many copies. They didn't care what it was for.

I guess it depends on what kind of company you work for. I just started my current job in March and everyone here knows about my fiance and bugged me to meet him when he was visiting in April (yes, I brought him in). SO I'm not worried about asking, I know it won't be a problem. I don't see why being honest about it is a problem. They aren't signing up to any legal obligation, just saying, "this person gets paid this much for working here and has worked here since xxx". It's the same as having someone call to verify employment before giving you a loan.

10/07/2006 WEDDING DAY!

11/14/2006 AOS packet made it to 'the box' after being overnighted.

12/02/2006 Paul had biometrics

12/14/2006 AOS Forwarded to CSC AND AP Application approved.

01/17/2007 First touch of 2007 at CSC

01/20/2007 Touched AGAIN (also the 18th) come on...

February: Oops, RFE for a REGISTERED marriage certificate. Oops! Overnighted it.

02/28/2007 Paul gets email letting us know his GREENCARD is on it's way! It's done...for now!

03/09/2007 Paul's greencard arrives. And breathe...

We began with mailing the I-129 in on February 27, 2006 so the whole process took us approx. one year.

Good luck out there!

I told them that is was for my fiance/husband's immigration paperwork. They didn't ask any more details and I didn't offer them.

I work for a very large company and HR knew exactly what I needed, as they must do them all the time for people who they sponsor for work visas.

I'd say just use your best judgement in disclosing the information you need to in order to get what you want...

Elena,

There's a big difference between your "whole life story" and your engagement to an immigrant. Show your HR rep the instruction for I-134 with the section about the employment letter highlighted and ask for the letter.
