I-751: Cheque/Check Cashed

Hi Everyone,

Oh the joys of online banking! As I just found out that my cheque/check for the I-751 ($545) was cashed, exactly a week after I sent the package in and when it arrived there by USPS two days later.

Never have I been (somewhat) relieved to see money go out of our joint bank account so quickly. Yet at the same time, I feel so broke as I now only have $0.20 left until payday... :crying: ...

The next step: Stare out my window endlessly all day for the rest of the week at my mailbox, waiting for the NOA1 extension letter... ...

Ant (Broke, somewhat relieved, and still waiting at the VSC...)

Yeah, it is a great feeling isn't it, the relief that comes from knowing that at least USCIS has accepted your application because they've taken the money even though it leaves you broke! You should receive your NOA soon.

The day they cashed my check was the date they received my package. I got the NOA 10 days later.

It's coming for you. Hang on.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your replies and for your encouragement. Yes, I'm still waiting at the VSC for the NOA next and for whatever else comes afterwards for the I-751

Oh well, at least I know that they got the stuff and that I sent in the correct (and oh so expensive) fees as the cheque/check was cashed (and stamped on the back of it "Vermont Service Center"). Hopefully, I'll hear something back from them soon. After all, when someone takes money, they should expect some sort of service in return, right? Oh the irony, indeed!

Good luck to everyone too on their immigration journey.

Oh, you optimistic fool, you! hehehehe, the service you get is that they cash your cheque!

Actually, you should receive the NOA fairly soon followed shortly afterwards by your ASC Biometrics appointment letter.

Hi Kathryn41,

Optismistic fool...lol...now that's funny  , indeed. Rarely in my life have I been called optismistic, so I guess I'll just take that as a compliment. For the most part, I've "encountered and seen the glass as half empty". Though at times when the situation is bad, I figure the best way to get out of it is to laugh about it and blindly hope that things will get better (such is the case with this long and expensive immigration process).

"Life is a like journey, a challenging immigration journey", I like to say....

Well, on the "glass as half full" note, yes, them cashing my cheque/check is better than them doing nothing at all or for initially rejecting my application based on having the wrong fees (yes, that almost happened to be the last AOS time around, luckly I caught that one in time before the lawyer did). So even though I'm broke, at least I can say that the cashing in of the cheque/check is one of the first steps towards completing this long I-751 stage.

Blindly being the optismistic fool (and checking out the information here on VJ), I'm also hoping to recieve the NOA in the next 1-2 weeks and the Biometrics letter appointment in the next 1-2 months and the approval to be within 1 year or less. Realistic, probably not. But I guess in dealing with the government/immigration, one doesn't really know what to expect other than "expect the unexpected"...

Ant (An optismistic fool waiting for the VSC....)

P.S. I like the way you spelt "cheque". Oh how Canadian and correctly English that is! Now, why can't Americans here spell words correctly like that?

Oh, you optimistic fool, you! hehehehe, the service you get is that they cash your cheque!

Actually, you should receive the NOA fairly soon followed shortly afterwards by your ASC Biometrics appointment letter.

Just a regular personal cheque is the best - it is what we used - and has the advantage that you can then check your online banking account and see exactly when it is cashed - and check the reverse to find out where it was cashed. The number that is on the back of the cashed cheque, however, is an internal number and can't be used to check the status of your account. It will be the NOA number, but you would need to wait for the ASC/biometrics number to check your online status. Still, a personal cheque is the best.

Hi Ant and All,

It seems you haven't received your NOA1 if I'm understanding right. If it's been close to a month, I'd give the uscis customer service center a call. Instead of retyping, see my lonely thread. :hehe:

Hi Mikowen10,

For the I-751 we used a personal cheque/check from our joint bank account, as that was the most convenient for us. As well, it can be seen as an extra piece of joint evidence, as the check/cheque has both mine and my husband's names on it. Also, you can track it online and/or by telephone to see if it was cashed or not.

As for the I-485/AOS, we sent in both a postal money and a bank money order, as we didn't have a joint bank account then, and that was the only way we could pay together at that time (though we had a problem with the bank money order, which delayed our case somewhat).

As per USCIS instructions, personal cheque/check and postal money order are acceptable forms of payment. It is your decision as to which one you use.

Personally, if you can, I would suggest go for the personal cheque/check...

Ant (Cheque/check cashed, and still waiting...)

What kind of check is used for the submission of the I-751 ? Just a regular personal check or a cashier's check or postal money order ?

Hi Andyesterly1,

Just to let you know, I did receive my NOA1, about a week or so after I had sent my I-751 in. For the story about that, you can read the following post about my "haunted mailbox and the NOA1": http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...p;#entry2159115

I'm glad you got your "duplicate" NOA1 for free without any problems too (I read the link to your post). I'm sure it's a relief to you that you have that in hand, and now don't have to worry about your expiring green card for another year. It's odd though that you got the biometrics letter first, as I don't think that happens too often. I have yet to receive my biometrics letter, and am still waiting for that. Nevertheless, I'm glad you got both the NOA1 letter and the biometrics done. Now all you have to do is continue waiting at the VSC...

By the way, since you're at the VSC now, you can add your name and information to the following message thread list "VSC I-751 Status List", so you can see and track your progress too, compared to other VJers on the same boat:
