Hello,

Not sure if anyone can help, but my wife's daughter had a F1 student visa interview in Moscow on June 30th. They said she needed an additional background check - but I am not sure why. The officer said it would take 4 weeks and now it has been 6 weeks and still no visa. If she is not able to make it to her college by the 29th of August, she will have to wait another year. She already has a lease on an apartment as well.

My question is why is it taking so long to complete? And is there anyway to expedite it? Does anyone know what the average time it has been taking recently to complete this check?

How long it takes is due to workload, staffing, and priorities. The processing time they give you is always an estimate, and sometimes wildly inaccurate. There's really no way to expedite. You can try to call them and lean on them, and maybe someone will take pity on her and move it to the top of the stack. But keep in mind that for every story like yours, there are dozens of others who feel theirs needs to be expedited also. Best of luck.

Have you e-mailed the embassy? Maybe they just forgot about it.

Ensure your beneficiary makes and brings with them to the States a copy of the DS-3025 (vaccination form)

If the government is going to force me to exercise my "right" to health care, then they better start requiring people to exercise their Right to Bear Arms. - "Where's my public option rifle?"

Slim, I think that would be something that would be decided at the interview and not in a background check. The background check is usually checking the name against criminal databases. There are no ways to speed it up and no ways to get more info. For a worst case scenario check out my timeline below this post and to be honest that is not a worst case. The worst case I ever heard of for background checks was 8 years and holding. There is a poll here someplace on VJ. It may come up in the simmilar topics thread under this thread. 4 weeks is pretty common but there are no certainties.

12/14/2006 Applied for K-1 with request for Waver for Multiple filings within 2 years.

3/6 Called NVC file sent to Washington for "Administrative Review" Told to call back every few weeks. 7/6 Called NVC, A/R is finished, case on way to Moscow. YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
7/13 On Friday the 13th we see updated Moscow website with our interview on 9/11 (Hope we are not supersticious) 9/11 Visa Approved. Yahoo.
10/12 Tickets for her to America. I am flying to JFK to meet her there. 12/15/07 We are married. One year and a day after filling original K-1
12/27 Filed for AOS, EAD & AP 1/3 Received all three NOA-1's 1/22 Biometrics 2/27 EAD & AP received 4/12 Interview
5/19/08 RFE for physical that she should not have needed. 5/28 New physical ($ 250.00 wasted) 6/23 Green Card received
4/22/10 Filed for Removal of Contitions. 6/25 10 Year Green Card received Nov, 2014 Citizenship ceremony. Our journey is complete.

Yeah, I remember your ordeal, TG. (Glad it's all over with!)

It could be limited to criminal databases, but I thought the generic term "background check" was basically a vague way of the embassy saying "we're working on it so hold tight, we'll call you when we're done."

Who really knows...
