Are you just applying for a K3? Or are you applying for Adjustment of Status once you get to the US?

Either way, they guides for both can be found in the GUIDES tab here on VJ. If you are good at following instructions and have a pretty clean, straightforward case, then there's no need to hire a lawyer unless you don't feel comfortable in doing it yourself.

You don't need a lawyer for the initial visa (K3), or the AoS once in the US, unless there are some big issues in your case (previous fraud accusations, big crimes etc). Just read the guides here and then, once you read them, you can ost questions if you still have any.

I'll be coming to the U.S. on a K3 very soon. How do we go about getting me a green card. Please walk me thru' its process. Thanks.

You will enter the USA with your K3 visa. It is valid for two years from the date it was issued and can be used for multiple entries. With the K3, you cannot work or get a social security number.

Once in the USA, you will need to file an I-485 (AOS; cost $1,010) and have it approved to receive your green card. At the same time, you can file for employment authorization (EAD; $0 if filed concurrently or subsequent to filing for AOS). As far as the timing, it is up to you. Since the K3 is valid for two years, you effectively have 18 to 20 months before you "have" to file for AOS. Depends on your need to work, have a SSN number, desire for a GC, etc.

The guides will lead you through the process. I wouldn't recommend a lawyer unless yours is a particular difficult case.
