Fun fact about your Canadian credit and moving here

Keep in mind many credit cards charge you an extra fee when you use the credit card out of country!!

The Royal Bank Visa is good to go on this front. I've been using mine down here for a while and never had any out of country fees associated with it.

Now, my check card down here will charge me fees if I use it in Canada. Silly banks.

That's my experience as well. I've never had any fees associated with using my RB Visa down here.

I do know my husband's MC has a fee when used anywhere other than the US. We therefore cut it up.

I don't think my CIBC hits me with fees - i think they charge a higher interest rate though for US transactions as I recall.

Does this bother anybody else? I have been independent and successful on my own and now that I've moved to the 'land of opportunity' I am being treated like a 2nd class citizen............guess I have PMS today, but this really rubs me the wrong way. Please, don't anyone say 'well, that's teh way it is, live with it'.......I know i'm stuck and have to follow the rules, I'm just venting.

I have to admit that I was bothered by it, too. But only because it was one more brick*.

*My analogy for the hoops you have to go through to establish yourself here. Having to prove your identity and/or yourself at every turn after you have already established yourself in your home country is very frustrating and demeaning. I likened each roadblock to another brick in the wall.... with the wall representing a barrier to keep me from establishing myself in the US, as well as the mounting of my anger. Which, consequently, made me rail against the system and want to return home. But I digress.

/philosophical rant

I let it go because I didn't need a credit card.... I could still use my Canadian ones with no problem or penalty. Then I suddenly started receiving credit card offers..... which I laughed at because their conditions were so ridiculous. Then the conditions started getting reasonable. Last November we purchased a new car. Nissan US called Nissan Canada and had them pull my credit report. Now the credit card conditions are competitive.

Time. The point of the matter is time. The roadblocks are a blow to our self-esteem and independence. But they are merely speedbumps..... they just slow you down. Once you get over them you're on your way again.

Ensure you do check ur credit card for those extar charges. Our citibank one does add a fee if I use it in Canada, and those sneaky fellows, total it up and you only see it once on your CC statement. You wil see th epurchase you made in the USA, and with the exchange rate, so you think thats it,lol I had to call them and ask what this "fee" was. Not a biggy. I normally just transfer money from my USA acct to my Cdn one with Custom House and use my Cdn debit card

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
