Sari-wearing women may face jail in Nigeria

Johannesburg: Indian women in their traditional saris with midriffs showing may find themselves falling foul of Nigerian law if a bill currently under discussion in that country is passed. Tourists in towelling wraps and Nigerian women in traditional dress with their stomachs exposed could also find themselves behind bars for three months or subjected to fines of $100, according to the Media24 News Service here.

While women's rights groups have come out strongly against the proposed law, Muslim leaders are supporting the bill, proposed by Senator Eme Ufot Ekaette, who felt that nudity was driving men to engage in corruption and steal from the state in Nigeria.

"Nudity leads to corruption," Ishaq Akintola of the Muslim Rights Watch, a strong supporter of Akaette's proposal, told Media 24.

"Nigerians are fighting corruption, through which many of our leaders, mostly men, have stolen fortunes for their personal use. They build colossal homes in London, Rome and New York because they have to spend money on women and have to hide them in these big homes."

Akintola said scantily dressed women were luring men. "They are being misled every time by a naked woman." Women's rights groups have called the proposed law "laughable", but are concerned that the House of Representatives in the capital Abuja may push it through, since the assembly has already considered it twice.

Onyinyechi Okechukwu of Alliances for Africa, a women's rights group, said the law would result in girls as young as 14 sitting behind bars in a country where police are reported to maltreat women regularly. The law would also be open to abuse because the police would have the discretion to seek out offenders on the streets, with the test being whether a woman's body was exposed lower than two inches above the neck or more than two inches above the knee.

"The police will have to carry tape measures around. How will a policeman know that my dress is two inches below my neck if he doesn't touch me? I'll slap him!" Okechukwu said, adding that it was unfair that men may freely walk around topless, while "it is certainly a turn-on for some women."

The Nigerian Feminist Forum said in a statement that more pressing issues in the country, such as female circumcision, the high infant mortality rate and rape of babies should get priority from the authorities.

I am not surprised..tension in Nigeria between the Muslims and the Christians is very high especially in the North. Parts of Nigeria in the North are ruled by Sharia(Muslim) law and they wish to spread it nationwide. Some even want to succeed from Nigeria and form their own country. (The Hausa tribe in Kano State )

http://www.the-spark.net/np692402.html

A lot of my American friends are unaware that Nigeria has a huge Muslim population they assume it it a Christian country. I have a uncle who lives in the North and you better believe that me and my female cousins are very aware not to offend anyone in our dress or actions when visiting. I was there when they had the protest against the Miss World contest ...very scary. I prayed that another civil war would not break out like the Biafra war. When the Europeans divide up Africa in to colonies they should of did it by tribal lands. I think if that had happen there would be less war today in Africa (This is just my opinion)

As usual and since the beginning of time it is the womans ' fault ' and the men refuse to be accountable.

Eve made me do it mentality.

Now they want to blame the women for the country's corruption. :girlwerewolf2xn: I say put more woman in charge and see a change.

That is all so sad and crazy !

Sit down.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

:thumbs: I thought the exact same thing when I read this. Took the words outta my mouth. I was shocked and then burst out laughing at the idea of women being the problem behind corruption. Puh-lease... Nobody told those guys to hide females in their big mansions. As much as I don't agree with the law and I hate to say this, I kind of hope they put the law in place just so they can see that WE are not the problem. The problem is greed, low moral standards, and power.

Laughable is right! This is the dumbest excuse for Nigerian corruption. Lay the blame where it belongs, on the men and women that hold these postitions and their quest for money, power, and status. Pair that with a lack of morals and of conscience and what do you get. Unfortunately this kind of attitude can be seen in all world governments and poeple of power today and there is always someone else to blame.

That is the part that caught my attention Omoba. It is the woman's fault that the man has a nasty mind or can't control his actions. Wouldn't it be lovely to live my life and only blame men for everything that I do. And have society agree with it? Tsk tsk again

The longer it takes to introduce yourself the less you've actually accomplished
